 New to uths

So, I’ve been given aquariums with heaters on them, but since my temps were fine, I never used them. But now, my sand boas have decided they want it warmed up, so I moved one into a 10 gallon with a heater and plugged it in, and she started eating again. But, I’ve since read you have to plug your uth into a stat to keep the temperature stable. But I’ve never been given anything but the pads, so I know most aren’t using them. So, my question would be, if it gets too hot, won’t the snake move? I understand heat rocks are dangerous because of burn risk, are uths the same?

Uth ’s depending on watts can get hot ...but the glass lowers it a bit...then the substrate acts as a thermal gradient as well. Usually never over 105 F directly...much less with substrate...do you have a temp gun??
temp gun

Lamp dimmer cords do a good job and can be adjusted each season or whenever you need...

Thanks, I’ll probably invest in some dimmers. My only question is will the snakes move away if they are too hot? Because I’ve heard they’ll just lay on heat rocks and burn.

Yes my king snake is on a UTH full blast...when he is done he moves off...he likes it hot @ 90 F and never has burned himself.

The issue with heat rocks is that they short out and temps spike well over the norm...thus burning the animal.

Ok, I guess that makes sense. I just heard I am supposed to stick a piece of reptile carpet over the area, so I did that. Now, checking in I found two baby sand boas relaxing under the carpet, so I don’t know about that one.
