Getting a new rosie a bitter too

ok so friday I am more likely then not picking up a rosy boa in trade for a gamecube long story but sounds good to me as I havent played it in years. I already have a burm ablino python who is very docile. This new snake is about 5 yrs old male who is 2 feet in length. she warns me he constantly bites fingers and hands> I know they have small teeth and all but will there be anyway to contol any of this behavior. I have always known rosey’s to be very good pets? any tips?

Well,if you have a biter, then all you should maybe make sure the cage and termps are all correct. The snake may be stressed out and has never been held. All i can really tell you is that you need to hold him as often as possible but let him be for the first week before trying to feed him or anything. Here is the basic care i give for new Rosy Owners.

They are very easy to take care of, extremely docile and don’t get extremely big. They will only grow up to 3 feet max and get as big around as about a golf ball but slightly smaller. Cage setup is easy. They’ll need a UTH (under tank heater), two identical hides (for cool and warm side), a small shallow water dish and you can add a branch or something to climb on. You will also want to get a digital thermometer for each side so you can read both the temps and the humidity. They don’t need high humidity; best for them is from 20-30% humidity no matter where you are located. The warm side of the tank should be from 85-90 degrees while the cool side should range from 75-80 degrees. For substrate (bedding) you can use Aspen bedding (doesn’t hold humidity), newspaper or paper towels. If you go with aspen bedding, make sure to change it often so it does not get dusty and cause your snake to get sick. Make sure the temperatures do not do past about 73 on the cool side otherwise; even then your snake could get sick. When you first get a baby Rosy Boa, they will feed on medium fuzzies and when they reach adult size, you can feed them adult mice or small rat pups. You should feed them no bigger then 1-1/2 the size of the thickest part of their body. They are burrowing snakes, but don’t hide a lot like sand boas do. Rosy Boas don’t need water all the time but offer it anyway since you really never know when they will want to drink. They are nocturnal snakes, but you can find them active during the day, especially if they are hungry. You can house a baby in a 10-gallon glass tank and once they get bigger, they can live the rest of their lives in a 20-gallon long. When you first purchase your Rosy, let them get used to their new home for a week before trying to feed it or handle it. They may still be slightly jumpy afterwards, but they will calm down. Don’t be afraid of getting bit, it really doesn’t hurt; it’s the surprise that gets ya! They aren’t always the cheapest snakes, especially if you get an albino, but you can find newborn babies at shows for $50 and up. My husband and I each have one; I have the male while he has the female. We plan to breed in the coming season but we’re unsure yet. I will post some pics of them along with an example of a cage setup!

Here is my male Arizona Desert Rosy Kain. He’s 2 ½ feet long.

Then this is my husband’s albino female Akira. She’s almost 3 feet long!

Heres Kain’s cage for an example! Warm side with the black hide, cool side with the rock hide.

Well, hes very pretty. I would of course take him off the sand and put him on papertowel or aspen. Also, gets two identical hides on each side and a under tank heater since hes never had a heat source. Also get two digital thermometers so you know exactly what the temps are in the cage and make sure they’re fairly high. 75-80 on the cool side and 85-92 on the warm side.

Heres a pic of what mine’s cage looks like:

vary beautiful snake indeed! I have a question though. You mentioned the temps be kinda high, after looking at your pic yours seems a bit low is it due to you opening up the cage? I’m just curious.....But yeah first thing I get him that sand is gone. I’m the one who deals ith the snakes my husband just help with feeding at times his favorite part, but I was trying to explain it to him he was like well the snkae has been doing fine on sand I’m like uh huh maybe the snake is stressed out from it as to why it bites so since it’s mine he doesnt have much say so and sand will be gone as soon as I get him home. Thanks for all your input it’s really appreciated...

Yea,his temps were low since i had his cage open for a bit and the AC was on. Normally the cool side reads 80-82 and the warm side reads 90-93 lol. I would actually put him right on papertowel when you get him, just to make sure hes alright and there are no problems, then you can make the choice of putting him on aspen or whatever. Just make sure you let him be for a week before feeding or handling just so he gets used to everything. Get some new hides to cuz that log hide is crap, they like dark places. I know i don’t have identical hides right now but i’ll be changing to the same hide as soon as i possibly can! That little black one was all i could afford at the time! He still has alot of room to grow!! I’ll post some pics of him as well as our female!

This is my boy Kain. Hes about 2 feet 7 inches right now!

Funny pic of him eating, he decided to go upside down and look up at us like "Hey,what do you want?"

Kain again!

Then this is our albino female, Akira. Shes almost 3 feet long. Very sweet girl!

Thank you! They are a joy to have even tho my little male has an attitude, but its all good..hes a good boy! Our girl though..wow,she wouldn’t hurt anything but her food, shes such a sweet girl. She loves crawling into my hair, she climbs up my nose into my hair or if i put her around my neck she’ll crawl up in my hair again! Just make sure to get some digital thermometers and a Under tank heater. Make sure the humidity stays fairly dry since they are desert dwelling snakes and like it where its dry. I’ll be waiting to see the new updated pics!
