 I got a Rosy today!

I got a male albino whitewater rosy today! He is so sweet. He was born in late Jan/early Feb and has been eating small fuzzies. He seems to be settling into his new home pretty well. He is mostly in his hide today but has ventured out a few times to explore.
I have been reading up on everything and seem to have everything under control but the humidity. I live in FL and I haven’t been able to get it down. He is on aspen right now but I am considering walnut substrate - any opinions on this one?
I also have this old dial-type hygrometer so I am going to get a digital tomorrow. Who knows, maybe his humidity isn’t really that high. It sure doesn’t feel like 60% when I put my hand in.
He has a screen top and I just can’t figure out how it could be so high.
Anyway, I will take some pics tomorrow or the next day to show him off.

Well congrats on the new Rosy! They’re awsome to own!! I would actually put him on paper towel. Its alot dryer and it doesn’t get dusty after a while, you only have to replace it once when he decides to go. Humidity should be in ab out 20s to low 40s and he’ll be fine. Make sure to get a digital thermometer, its so much easier to read. You can pick one up at Walmart for like $6.47. They are a good starter species, i hope he gets settled in well. I’ll post a pic of my husband’s albino limburg Rosy Boa as well as my Arizona Desert rosy boa in a few. It won’t let me get my pics open right now!

 I got a Rosy today!

So I got a new hygrometer and my humidity is actually fine. It is 32% NOT 65 like it was reading. I took my old one outside - where I know the humidity is closer to 80+ right now and it still read 65, so that is when I knew for sure I needed a new one.

So I have a question. I tried feeding him tonight and he didn’t eat. According to his feed records he ate last on 7/10. I tried feeding him a f/t fuzzie and he smelled it alot but never ate it. I left him and the fuzzie in the container for 20 minutes and still nothing.

I am trying to feed him outside his tank - in a small rubber maid container. Inside his tank his hot spot is 88-90 and his cold spot is 80. So, I think that is OK.

Should I try again tomorrow or should I give him till this weekend to try again?

Well,if you just bought him you should really leave him be for a week before trying to feed or handle him. Temperatures are perfect and so is the humidity!! YAY!! lol sorry! Yea,its good you got a digital, those crappy ones suck. You should actually try feeding him inside his enclosure. It is alot less stress and its somewhere comfortable for them to be. Next time, try feeding in his enclosure and just give him a few more days to adjust. And again, i would post pics of mine for you to see but its not cooperating!

I know, you’re right I should have left him alone... I got excited and couldn’t resist. But I will give it till at least Sat which is 1 week from when I bought him.
So you feed inside your enclosure? I will try it. But I have him on Aspen right now and don’t want to change to paper towel just yet since he is still adjusting. Should I put the fuzzy on something in his enclosure so it isn’t sitting right on the aspen?
Thanks for all the advice!

 I got a Rosy today!

Well, we had ours on aspen but my male ended up getting sick because i didn’t change it often enough since i couldn’t afford to go buy a whole bunch of it at the time and so i changed the papertowels and its worked alot better and he has gotten over his RI (it was back in Febuary). If you want...when you feed him, you can take him out for a second as well as say his water bowl and such and then place some papertowel over the aspen, put him down on it then the mouse. Just keep an eye on the mouse so it doesn’t go under the papertowel. I wish i could post some pics for you but its just not letting me open up my picture folder thing here on Repticzone :(
