 Tree boa and tree pythons?

Ok I know this is going to sound stupid to someone who knows the answer but here goes.

I was at a pet shop that carries several kinds of snakes and they had both a tree boa and a tree python. What is the difference? I looked at them and to me, other then being a different color, they looked the same. The boa was green and the python was kind of a brown/gold color.

I have long been fascinated with tree boas so I was just wondering(with my budget I will not be getting one anytime soon.)

Thanks for your help(and hopefully not yelling and/or laughing)

If you are talking about a comparison between M. viridis and C. caninus, I like to say that they occupy the same niche, half a world apart. LOL

As mentioned, the GTP is an egg layer and the ETB bears live young. If you look closely at the GTP you will see that the heat receptors are only on the lower jaw ( I can’t post a picture because I don’t own any) but here is a link to a head photo.

Here is a link to one of my girls (ETB) and there is a good head shot that clearly shows the heat receptors on the upper and lower jaw.

Care is basically the same. Hatchling GTPs are very small, while neonate ETBs are much bigger. Both go through an ontogenetic change. This change in ETBs is very gradual, happening over several months, which usually starts at about 3 months and finishes around 10 months. my understanding about GTPs is that the color change happens much later, but it is almost over night. maybe Cathy will come along and give us more specifics on GTP color change.

I already knew that boas had live young and pythons lay eggs. I just didn’t know if there were drastic differences in their appearance.

Like I said I think they are very beautiful animals and I have always liked them but until the other day I was not aware there was both a boa and a python species. I thought they were all boas. I am interested in learning more about them though if you or anyone else has some good sites about their care and such. I would really appreciate it,

This will get you in the ball park and if you go to the forums, you can ask there and the folks will direct you.
