 Read, The BAN

THIS IS IMPORTANT, SO READ.
This was posted by NERD and another forum.

Quote:

Folks this is SERIOUS!!!! US Fish & Wildlife is proposing a ban of ALL SPECIES in the genera of Python, Boa & Eunectes. If this is passed, it will ban all interstate trade (that means buying & selling!) or importation of those genera (genera = plural for "genus") in the private sector.

Eunectes = Anacondas
Boa = includes ALL of the Boa constrictor species...yes, your Colombian boas, your red-tails, Argentine, Bolivian, Brazilian...anything whose scientific name starts with Boa constrictor...

And folks, the genus "Python" encompasses the following:

Ball pythons
Angolan pythons
Bloods & short-tails
Burms/rocks
Retics
Timors

This is SERIOUS! This is FOR REAL!!! It is time for us ALL to have a voice & make our feelings known in a polite, respectful yet FIRM way!

I know linking to other sites is usually a no-no, but there is an entire write-up on this at Pet Hobbyist:

Link

The time to act is NOW!!!!!!! If this goes through, herpetoculture as we know it is going to RADICALLY change, and NOT for the better! No more big reptile shows, because out-of-state vendors wouldn’t be able to attend. No more buying your snakes from a breeder out of state. No more herpetoculture as it is right now!

Here is the address, it is best to write them to get our point across.

RIN 1018–AV68, Division of Policy and Directives Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 4401 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 222
Arlington, VA 22203

This act is due to people receiving all boas, pythons, and anaconda from out the United States, and after they get too big, or bad hobbyist get tired of them, they release them. Just as Rats are not indigenous to the US but have made a great impact on the US by coming in through crates, and what not. so we need to make a stand and let them know that they will be hurting many boa, python, anaconda owners. Let them know in a respectful voice. as much as i want to go off on them, i cant, because what does that show on our part? so lets do this.

I understand snake owners being upset about this, but you really have to understand why this has been proposed. Escaped and released boas, pythons, etc have caused A LOT of problems for native species, especially in Florida, and while it really sucks for responsible owners, I understand why this is happening. I don’t think it should include ALL species, maybe just the larger ones, as they are the ones causing the most problems. I am looking into getting a boa, and while I would love to get one, I am also a college student studying wildlife and zoology and I completely understand why this ban has been proposed. It’s going to come down more the compromise. I don’t think all boa, python, etc species should be banned, but if it becomes inevitable, I would completely understand banning anaconda, retics, burms, etc. The native species were here first, and they are suffering. This is all the fault of man, so we have to try and fix it, and if that means banning some exotic species of extremely large snakes, or banning other exotic species that are damaging our native species, then so be it. Our loyalties should be with our native species, and it is truly unfortunate that there are so many irresponsible herp owners out there, but it’s the reality, and the reality is there is a big problem with escaped and released exotic species.

Additionally, especially in the cases of the larger species, it really isn’t fair to them, they are big animals that need A LOT more space then they are often given. They are happiest in the wild. So I would more than fine with a ban on the larger species. And I know that I am probably going to be attacked for saying these things, but it’s not necessary to own an anaconda, or a burm, or a retic. It isn’t necessary to own any reptile, it is an unnecessary pleasure and a privilege that has been taken advantage of by way too many

Honestly, I’m all for banning problematic species(burms, retics, etc)especially in Florida, where the native wildlife is being extremely threatened by an introduced population of large constrictors, mostly burms

Or, how about requiring all owners of boas, pythons, etc.(in particular the larger ones, not necessarily the smaller ones that aren’t causing problems)get permits and have these owners strictly monitored. Have the permits more on the expensive side, to weed out those who just want a snake to have a snake, and have the snakes microchipped in case they ever escape, that way, when they are captured(or killed)authorities can discover who the owner was and handle the situation accordingly. Additionally, after getting a permit(but before getting the snake) have the enclosure be checked over and approved of by trained officials. That way, those who really wanted these snakes could still get them, with the hopes of weeding out irresponsible owners and putting a stop to escaped and released snakes that are causing problems.

i agree 100%
i think they should atleast try to compromise by just banning out larger species like burms, rectics, and rock pythons etc. thats just a start. then we should have to " register " our animals and get microchips for them for if they do escape and permits would also be good and would also weed out the people who jus twant a snake to have a snake and the serius caring herp people.

Exactly, and it would be better for the animals. So many snakes, and other reptiles for that matter, are so often mis-treated and poorly cared for.

That would be a great idea for the larger snakes. That way they could track the snakes owner down and they could be held accountable

Here’s an idea. How about licensing for the owners?

I pretty much thought this was a dead post as these laws have already been out into effect here in Florida. Basically anysnake that gets over 10 feet. I do have 2 burmese pythons. it’s actually fairly simple to get a liscense. first you take your snake to the vet and have it microchipped roughly 50 bucks per snake. Then you fill out the required forms and it’s 100 dollars a year. I wasn’t too happy with this law when I found out, but hey here in Florida it is terrible. It’s not only people leeting their pets go, it also has come from the major hurricanes destroying homes that had snakes. Needless to say I have my 2 burms registered. It’s a small price to pay to have such beautiful animals. After I was given my first burmese I had an idea here. Start a reptile rescue. There arent many around here or that many in Florida period. I post my rescue on kingsnake and on craigslist. OMG you wont beleive the overwhelming response I have gotten from people. I hear all the time, COme get it just get it out of here. If you don’t come I’m letting it go it’s just too much work or they are too big. A sanke too much work come on seriously they are less work then a dog or a cat. I don’t know stupid people irritate me.
