 Dwarf Boas

Has anyone here had any experience with dwarf boas? Specifically Hog Island and Caulkers Cay boas. I’m interested in getting some kind of dwarf boa. I’ve been doing tons of research for months now and best case scenario I wouldn’t be able to get the animal for months yet. Any info at all on them from personal experience would be appreciated. I’ve read everything I can find about them online so please don’t copy/paste some link to a wbesite. I want to know more from previous/current owners. Size, temperment, caging, anything you may think would be helpful would be great. Thanks for taking a look and/or helping me out.

Sorry only experience with dwarf retics...and normal boas. But they are both very well mannered due to handling and constant supply of food.

Friends here have owned normal Hogs and they are just as sweet as ever. Snakes can be just like people...every now and again ya get a mean 1, but for the most part they are nice. Start young feed often and handle constantly.

Free roaming under supervision is a great character builder and bonding experience

Enclosure choice is a matter of size and budget...I used a 2x2x4 for the boa’s first few years and 2 summers ago I purchased a 2x2x6 from someone getting out of the biz. For a dwarf a think the 2x2x4 would be ample for the life of the snake.

Depending where you are you might be able to find any number of enclosures...
here is a comprehensive list of all the builders and links to pricing and sizing.

ENCLOSURES

Good Luck with your search

I’ve narrowed my search down to a Hog Island cross. I know some people frown upon mixing locales but once I saw some hypo and orangetail Hogs, I knew that was the boa for me. I originally planned on getting him in a few months but I can handle one now. I never really considered letting the boa free roam but I guess it’s not like a 5ft boa is going to disappear in the blink of an eye haha. Anyway, I’m super happy with my decision and can’t wait to get him next month.

Congrats on getting 1

You’d be surprised how they can get themselves into and behind things when they want to hide.

Best Regards

I agree with you there. I had a ball python disappear on me a few years ago. She was gone for a day or two and when I found her she was underneath the entertainment center in my front room. The opening was nearly half the size of her. Where there’s a will there’s a way I suppose.

any reptile of size can be lost but any cross hogs are gonna be bigger than the pure ones. i lost my 17’ burm before because the goose i bought for his dinner was running throughout the house and he was out during that time but he was under my bed...i finally found him when he struck at the bird and starting constricting it.

You want a burm??? They get huge and enclosures need to be big as well, mine likes to climb despite his large size. Do you have experience in large snakes??

Oh...there’s some good places online but I can’t remember were I got my red tail from but my bf friend just gave me his adult dumeril boa and I’m still researching on his care and good thing I had an extra cage...the zoo wouldn’t take him and he’s kinda bipolar. Boas are good its just there kinda unpredictable then pythons.
