Freaking out I’m kinda freaking out right now because my snake usually eats hoppers and the pet store that i go to had no hoppers but its been aabout a week since i fed her last. i decided it would be time to switch over to rats now that she is a yearling anyways so i went ahead and got one of the smallest rats they had. i feed mine live because she wouldnt take frozen thawed food. when putting it in there i thought it was a little big but the guy at the pet store assured me that it would be fine. so i put it in there and put the snake in the box and normally with the hoppers she grabs it and they yelp once and she kills them within seven seconds. well with this one she grabbed it and it didnt yelp and i was like ok so far so good. but then after about thirty seconds the thing started moving around a little and was completely moving the snake around the box. i looked and it stopped about ten seconds later and she was starting to eat it. It seems like it is too big but about four minutes later she had half the rat down adn was still working. I didn’t know what to do and i didn’t want to stick my hand in there. can anything go bad if you feed your snake a rat that is too large. someone please help me and answer soon becasue I need to know what to do. i hope she is ok.

Freaking out Like addicted said she is fine, I have found that if the prey item is to big they won’t eat it or they will puke it back up but by the looks of the snake you shouldn’t worry you just might find that she may not be too hungry next feeding if she is scheduled.

Freaking out From the looks from the photos, she is going to have no problems. From the sound of the text above the photos I was thinking the rat was going to be 3 times larger then your snake. I would not make it a habbit but a good rule I use is if the meal is twice as large as the thickest part of your snake its to big.

Freaking out The good thing about your snake is that boas are GREEDY so more than likely they’ll try to eat whatever is put in front of them so you want to be careful of the size because some snakes that regurge won’t eat until everything is 100% perfect.
but you have a beautiful snake.
Here is a picture of mine, i keep it on 2 -3 adult mice a week.

Freaking out Alright, that rat is prolly a good size for your snake. Or maybe a little smaller just to be safe. As long as the rat isnt too much bigger then the thickest part of the snake, it shouldnt have any problems. I wanna suggest a way to switch to F/T or atleast something that isnt feeding live. Rats can be pretty dangerous to your snakes. Hold the head behind the ears and pull on the rats tail with your other hand. This will instantly kill the rat. It will twitch a little bit, just enough to get your snake to want to eat and it will be warm and wont harm your snake. i am currently doing this for a few snakes. After your snake takes a few of those, try prekilled that has sat for awhile and rewarmed. then you can switch to F/T from there real easy. this is just a way I have been using for a few of my snakes and works pretty well. BTW, a yearling BRB should be on rats much earlier anyway so you did a good thing. :)

Freaking out well i hate to bring bad news to the table but that was the first small rat that i have fed to my snake and is so far the last one. i have been feeding my snake hoppers still. I don’t want to feed my snake anything too big. i tried a frozen thawed rat and even warmed it up with a hair dryer a few weeks ago and still didnt have success so we are sticking with live at this point in time unfortunately.
