 New Boa, New Bite!

This is my new and first Red Tail. He is 6ft and i named him Nemesis! I have 3 other snakes, nothing nearly this big though. I have a 2 1/2 ft ball python, a 16inch ball, and a 13inch corn. Now on to the bite, he bit me when i tryed to get him out this morning.Hes ok, im fine. Now im just nervous to get it out, i dont know if its just stressed because of its new home. Plus when i got him out i had to pull him towards me from behind.(is that wrong to do?)

You should probably give him a week to ten days before you start handling him or anything so he can get used to his cage. Also I would look into getting a different cage thats wooden(animals plastics, boamaster or make your own) and at least 4ft long because a wire cage isn’t going to be good keeping the temps and humidity at all. Good luck with your new boa

it wasnt bad at all, it scared me alot though, so much that it didnt hurt. It really just felt like long needles going in and out real quick. alittle while later it started hurting in my hand a bit, but im fine.

have you gave yours time to settle in? somone told me to grab it by the back of the neck, up by the head, and the first few times getting it out to throw a towel over its head. Does anyone know if these are wise ideas?

No,hooks are for smart people.

Don’t handle him for a week, then only a few times a week after that.Everyday is too much.Did you look in to this before you got the snake? That cage is completely wrong in every way for this species,It will most certainly lead to health problems.

Get a hook and a new cage asap,do some research on there care needs and ask some more questions here.

Jason.

ya three pet stores said the cage would be great for it. one owner has 90 snakes of her own, the reptile rescue had her 8ft rtb in a similar cage. Ive done about 2hrs of research anight for atleast a week before getting him. Everyone said i was doing everything right except trying to get him out so soon. but maybe there wrong

Like I said in the PM if you go to Wal-Mart and get an Acurite thermometer/hygrometer they are only $12. They will be in the garden or hardware department. Once you do that take the probe and put it on the warm side and place the display part on the cool. Then let us know what your temps are.

Also if you get wood to cover the sides you need to make sure you seal it with polyurethan. Then make sure you let it air out until there are no fumes before the snake comes near it. Good luck with that and if you need anything else just let me know.

Raising the temps you would need to get more or higher wattage heaters. The best thing to use is a Ceramic heat emitter, CHE. These do not give off light so they wont interrupt the natural day/night cycle. If it is too high then remove some heaters. As far as humidity goes if it is too low you can add a larger water dish (should be large enough for your snake to soak in anyway.) Or you can always add more dishes or mist the cage. If it is too high move the water dish to the cool side or get a slightly smaller one. If there is anything else just let me know.

Randy,
How are you keeping your temps up to a tropical level for that snake? I have a Boa that will NOT eat unless his temps are 96 degrees... not 95 not 97... has to be 96 degrees. The humidity will vary depending on.. lol type of enclosure... where you live... where enclosure is located in your house..etc... I keep my humidity between 48-50 degrees... bump it a little during shed.. and all is well... but I live in Myrtle Beach where it is humid anyway.
I have a 5’ male and a female that is 7’ if I were you.. I’d get a new enclosure immediately if not sooner than that... get my temps correct... move the snake in.. leave it alone for 1 week to 10 days.. no handling... no feeding... only spot clean and freshen water. After that... offer food again.
As for hooks... ALL of my snakes are hook trained.. I have never been bitten and don’t want to start now. I have everything from baby Ball Pythons to 7’ boas.... smart...serious minded collectors use hooks. My 7 footer bit my snake partner (never hold anything over 5’ without someone else present or at the very least they know what you’re doing) anyway she bit him... she has a HUGE bite radius... I’ve seen less blood during child birth...snake bites aren’t funny... they can do major damage to you.. and what’s more.. they can do major damage to your snake’s mouth... so avoid them at all costs. (altho I am known on here for my LOVE of seeing their bite pics)
Also, since you have other snakes.. I am assuming that you are practicing VERY GOOD sanitizing techniques and that you have your boa in quarantine for 30-90 days...30 days being the very least I would have done.
Anyway... hope this helps... good luck
~smiles~
Suz

A CHE is nothing like a heat rock. They replace a light bulb in a light heater. As long as the heater is on the outside of the cage where he can’t reach it then it won’t burn him. As far as handling him I would wait until everything is fixed and then let him settle for a week or so. If you HAVE to handle him before then I would move slowly and grasp him about a third way from his head then support the rest of his body. If he is hissy and strikes at you then leave him be or get yourself a hook.

alright, thanks so much for all the help. now more questions haha. Hes been in his cage for 5 days now, and hes moving around alot. Do you think maybe its because hes hungry? He at almost 2 weeks ago. Hes becomming less hissy, every once in a while ill stick my hand in and pet him.(is that ok to do)Also it seems like he knows where the door is, cause he’ll go over to it and peak his head up. haha its kinda funny. but also my gf has two hamsters in the room. could that drive him nuts?
