Colt,
First.. a true RED TAIL gets larger than a common boa (which are often called red tails and aren’t.) They get in excess of 10-12 feet. Their temperaments are wonderful.. I have 2 and I LOVE mine. Their lifespan..when properly cared for is 20+ years on up. Younger..smaller..more active snakes should be fed 1 appropriately sized prey item every 7 days or so older..slower.. less active snakes should be feed every 10-14 days... 1 appropriately sized prey item. You’ll get different opinions on the definition of appropriately sized... some say slightly smaller.. some say slightly larger.. I go with as close to the same size as I can get to the snake’s girth..or largest part of it’s body. I have a 5’male that I feed 1 med rat once a week and a 7’ female that eats a large rat once a week. remember... just because it CAN eat something larger..doesn’t necessarily mean that it SHOULD eat more or larger. Overfeeding is very dangerous to a snake. It causes obesity, constipation, regurgitation, and cuts your snakes life span tremendously.I have 21 snakes.. and I make it my business to read as much on snakes as I can... the best thing that I’ve found is... research the type of snake you keep... read as much as you can... ask questions from people who keep snakes... bare in mind their answers will only be the truth as THEY SEE IT. Listen.. and file them in the back of your brain for future reference.... what they tell you.. plus what you can confirm through research... your own experience ..added with a little common sense... and you’ll be handling your new Boa with ease and confidence. When you can.. post some pics. Good luck.. let us know how you’re coming along!
