Where’d you get him/her? They don’t have any blue pigment actually, but it’s the light. They’re one of my favorite wild birds, I didn’t know you could keep them. Was it nursed back to health or is there actually a breeder?

well i cough him with another male bunting that i had in a cage trap, about a year ago hes now calmed down unlike when i first cough him he was jumping and flying inside the cage wanting to get out, now that its more calm i switched him to a small cage trap and hopefully ill catch more indigos and painted buntings this year.

You should get a flight cage used for finches for the buntings. here:

(very old pic but whatever)

I would love to see the painteds and more indigos. How do you catch them? You made the traps? What do you feed them? Are you going to breed them and release babies? Where do you live?

na i bought the trap i catch them very easy just put the male bird inside the trap take it to the woods and leave it hanging on a tree for about 10 hours.what happens is that buntings are attracted to other males when they sing so i just put some food in the trap whenever a bird gets near the trap because it hears my bird sing it sees the food and goes to eat it when it lands on the food the trap opens and there cought. btw i do not breed them i always release the females and keep the males because they look better and sing

i dont know if its because im a novice or what but why would you want to trap a perfectly heathly bird and take away his freedom ? he was not in any danger outside ? he was not bothering anyone ? why would you trap him and put him in a cage he can no longer fly in ? for looks take a picture put it on the wall

Here is a stupid question for you.....
Have you checked with your state DNR to see if they are an endangered or protected species?
The only reason I ask, is it is usually illegal to keep any native birds as pets with out a special permit.

Just wanted you to know.

Last time I checked, it is illegal to own even the FEATHERS of a native bird of any species. The only birds you can trap are european starlings, house sparrows, and pigeons.

Why would you want to catch and trap a bird from the wild? He had freedom and a life and was used to stretching his wings :( To me thats like scribbling all over a masterpiece painting. We have no more right to take a bird out of the sky than we do to take a fish out of water. He must be so sad
