The great substrate debate
What is the best substrate for my beardie? (sans butcher paper and paper towels, tile etc). I had vita-sand, promptly changed that. Now I have ground english walnut shells, which he actually seems to like as he is moving around the cage more, but have read dire things about this. I have read so many pros and cons to each substrate that it gets very confusing.

The great substrate debate okay any shells vita sand calci sand glue paint anything liek that never use. eat it lick it smell it i dont know its deadly to them. you can use regular playsand if you want dont recomend it to any dragon over the age of 12 inches long lol we dont recomend to first tiem dragon users unless you are very experience and in a vast of knowlege of keepign up your your husbandry. tile can be used but some peopel dont liek it ebcause it can possibly have an effect on the toes. tho none have shown proof of this but not sure. i like to use tile as a basking area and use repti carpet for everywhere eles. and paper towels for a back up. use what ever you want cuz i cant really change yoru mind but keep in mind the problems with the stuff yoru using. paper towels repticarpet sand non adhesive shelf liner tiles these are what people use i recomend any of them cept sand unless your experienced like i said.

The great substrate debate If your beardie is still a baby, he will be better off with a substrate that isn’t loose (like sand or walnut shells) because babies can easily get impacted if they eat their substrate. I use newspaper for my younger dragons. Adult dragons, on the other hand, can better handle loose substrates, so I give them sand. I advise against using colorful fake sand because I tried it once and it dyed my dragon’s belly orange.

The great substrate debate Walnut shells is the worst substrate for beardie’s. If you have a baby, I’d stick with a solid substrate until he is a bit older (ideally an adult). Washed and sifted play sand or dirt are best as far as loose substrates go.

The great substrate debate he might be moving around more because he’s uncomfortable or just by coincidence.
it’s difficult to gauge what they like and don’t like at times

Everything you stated except sand. I agree with what everyone has said, especially for a baby...
