 Supers

I recently posted a thread concerning the weight of my 2 rescue bearded dragons. With the suggestions of several people, I have started feeding my beardies some supers along with their salads each day. Both of the beardies are well over a year and well over 12 inches long.

I just have to say, that for me, supers have worked fantastically! I have been feeding them in moderation, and also "hitting" the head of the super before I feed it as to avoid internal biting...but wow, I have seen a great improvement in my bearded dragons’ weight and so it appears, over-all health.

So just a shout out to those who helped me out, thanks so much! The supers really did work.

thats great to hear i feed mine suppers all the time infact i made it his main staple. i know most people will prolly yell at me for it but oh wellz hehe he loves them. my only concern is can anyone tell me what the fat content of them are. can supers cause Fatty liver disease? this is what concerns me cuz yes i see a big improvement in his size due to the supers. but ima i doing more harm anything? and i already knwo about the chance of impactiona dn i watch for it. but he poops almost every day so no needs to worry ^^ just curious on the FLD

Hey Sham..

Superworms

Fat: 17.9%
Protein: 17.4%
Fiber: 6.8%
Water: 60%

I got this quote from a site that they were being talked about alot, this is from a pro...

Quote:

I feed Randal superworms as her staple bug and they’re definitely not "modified" in any sort of way. Your dragon will want more than 30 a week, they’d probably eat their weight in supers if you let them, but you need to control their protein intake in order to reduce the risk of fatty liver disease and other health problems.

This is why i always say to mix supers with silks or roaches or etc, they are high in protein, and fat as you can see...If you only feed Feeney supers, he may not want to eat anything else now...

Nancy.

You do not have to do this, if the chomping doesn’t kill them, the digestive juices will, lol...so they will not bite the dragons insides, lol..

Ok. King worms and supers are the same, right? To my understanding.... you have to decapitate them from eating your dragon from the inside. That is my main concern about feeding them to the female. SHe does not chew them well, unlike HOG, there is no way they go down alive!! LOL -- ok, maybe that is a myth?
Ok... arent they bad in the way of having such a hard exoskeleton??

Yes king or supers are the same...and it is just a myth about them eating or biting your dragon from the inside out. They do have some what of a chitin shell, but not as much as meals, they are fine to feed to a dragon of the right age, but like i said, should be given a different variety, and not supers only....

nO... hog LOVES all WORMS. He will eat anything that moves! LOL -- but I only would feed them inmoderation because of the whole head thng. LOL -- worry, I couldnt do it!! I do buy them. I only buy a 100 at a time, and store them. I feed him some about 1-2 times a week.
I bought them hoping to faten up my girl, but got kinda scared because she is NOT a good chewer! Should I not be worried then???..... I NEED for her to gain some weight!

Hi Nina,

You only feed supers once or twice a week so i think she will be fine, as long as your temps are correct she will beable to digest them with no problems...don’t worry, lol...from what i have heard, lobster roaches will put weight on her, and it’s a bonus that they are so nutritious...

yeah feeney doesnt get supers all the time usually what i do is every other day some times he goes with out for a few days if he has had a big lunch or what not. he gets crickets once in a while. you know my living condition and the stupid tenant and landlords wont let me house anything eles :( so over protient can cause fld wow didnt know that wow. okay so deff do an every other day one day of salad other day of worms. i only feed him a little bit tho like 10 or so a feeding if that so he gets like 25-40 worms about every other day or so. and iv learn a couple times that they need air. lol iv killed and brough back my supers like 3 times since i bought them. air is accential lol and for people wanting to do supers make sure that you are dusting them good. for older dragons only need to dust 2 a week and if you take your dragon out alot dont even need the d3 dusting ^^

Yup, well Padme and Anakin have been getting about 5 supers a day, dusted, and a full salad each day...and it’s helped them immensely! Oh, and they’ve both had regular bowel movements so I’m not too worried about impaction.

Yeah, well trust me, if I would let him, Anakin would eat like, 50! lol, but since I live so far out I only got 50 and am running out so have to guage how many I give them per day. But I just ordered quite a few off of lllreptile with a light and probes...so hopefully I’ll be able to feed more soon.

NINA i noticed you said you stored them?

do you mean in the fridge? cause supers will die in the fridge so if they are livivng they are not supers

i think you may have mealworms there are mealworms that are called king mealworms or king worms

they are regular mealworms but loaded with a bunch of crap to make them grow bigger

just wanted to make sure that wasnt what you had lol

No... I keep them in a plastic container with drilled holes on top for air. They will not live in the fridge. I keep them in raw oatmeal mixed with baby rice cereal. I also put a couple pieces of apple, greens, or potatoe for them to chew on.
No mealworms. :)
