 My BD hates me :-(

When I first got my BD, she was easy to pick up and fun to hold. Now, after about 2 months she hates me. When I am in the room, she is tense and shows her beard and won’t move the entire time. When I put my hand in the cage, she runs away and tries to bite me.

I am trying to hand feed her and handle her, but I can’t even pick her up. I’m afraid that she will bite me. I tried picking her up with a towel, but I am afraid that I am just traumatizing her. Any advice?

Hi there,

What brand of uvb are you using for her and what are the temps? Also what do you measure them with?

How often do you hold her? So she is a coupple months old?

Nancy.

Bearded dragons seldom bite people, but when they are scared they like to pretend that they are going to. You can’t tame your dragon unless you handle it. Be brave and pick up your bearded dragon anyway. Try not to reach straight down from the sky like a bird about to snatch its prey. Instead, approach her from the side so that you don’t seem so threatening. When you hold her make sure that you are supporting her legs so that she feels secure. Keep her head tilted slightly higher than the rest of her body.
Bearded dragons can sense when you are afraid of them and that makes them nervous. To help keep your lizard and yourself calm, sit down somewhere while you are holding her. Too much movement will increase your heart rate and scare her.

I stongly agree with the above statement!
Just like a dog, cat, or any other animal. They can sence your energy. They will also do it to be dominate... so that it is their way and not yours. You need to calm down, dont be scared, and pick her up. If you scared, shes scarded. If your nervous, she is nervous....etc. What you feel, reflects their mood.
Try approching her different or maybe hand feed her while she is OUTSIDE her tank. I have yet to get bit my a beardie. This guy was telling me how mean his female was, and how they dont hold her cause she is so mean... yada yada yada..they had her for 5 years, her whole life.. yada yada.... and I reached in and picked her up NO problem. I now have her with me.
I find with my male.. if I support his body, he is more comfortable. He will just chill. But if he does not feel supported, or scared...he starts to scurm.
Dont give up!! :)

Nina

I have a Repti-glo 10.0. I have a thermometer in the cage, the type that hangs. I used to hold her everyday, until she started acting up. She is 2 1/2 months old.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will keep holding her and try not to be afraid of her. I just get scared sometimes. I tried hand feeding her bits of mango, but she wouldn’t eat. I guess I will keep working on it!

Well, I think we might have just found a contributing problem! I would remove the ReptiGlo ASAP!!! That is not a good light to use... actually, is one of the worse. It is known to be VERY harmful. Maybe it is a reflection of her mood?? She is only 2.5 months?? And she is already that aggressive?

I dont believe mango would be too good for them. Im not possitive on that, but it is a fruit that is high in acid. There is a very goo dlist on Beautiful Dragons.com that you might find helpful. Are you feeding her crickets 3 times a day also?

BUMP <------------------this needs attention RIGHT now.... I would remove the ReptiGlo asap and replace with a ReptiSun. If you can afford the ReptiSun right now, I would take her out for natural sunlight versus using that ReptiGlo.

Yep, Nina is right, this is why i asked what uvb you were using, last year my male did the same thing due to this light, he stopped eating, stopped basking, became very lethargic, and then he got a little mean as well, and he is a sweetheart...he was close to death, shut this light off asap. The only safe ones are the ReptiSun 10.0 long tube or the ReptiGlo 8.o tube or a MVB...if you have to order a new tube light, take him outside every day for 30 min, for natural sunlight, and he will be fine with that until you get a new one...make sure to shut his light off asap, or he will keep getting worse....

Ahh! Sorry it took me so long to respond and making you guys worry! I turned it off the first day I posted this, as soon as I read a different post on the site that said it was bad.

I picked her up today. I put a white sock over my hand (in case she bit) then transfered her to my regular hand. She didn’t even run! However, she did jump out of my hand while I was sitting on the floor. It wasn’t bad though. She didn’t open her mouth or hiss the entire time. I tried hand feeding her but it didn’t work.

Keep doing it...our first male was like that too and the more we held him the better he got. Since yours is a jumper, like mine, make sure you have a hand over his back when you’re walking with him so he doesn’t jump out! Not far to fall when sitting but would be much worse if you were standing. And I’m fairly confident in saying that he DOESN’T hate you, lol, just doesn’t know you well yet ;)

Glad to hear from you, lol...and very happy you shut off that light...she may not eat for a while depending on how long she was under the reptiglo light, i had to feed my male baby food with a syringe for weeks befor he actually ate on his own again...it took him a long time to get healthy again...these lights are so harmful to them, it’s such a shame they are still being sold...good luck to you, and if you have any more questions/concerns, just ask...

And hey, depending on how long she was under the light and how sick she is, she’s probable very dehydrated right now, these lights will also do this, give her lots of warm baths and i suggest getting her some ParaZap, it’s on a thread i did here for a few people and will fix her up in no time...the info about it is on a coupple posts down if you would like to read about it, or just Google, Parazap.com...

Thanks, I will be sure to make sure she’s hydrated and I will look into the parazap. I worry about her hydration because she HATES baths, won’t eat greens, and I never see her drinking from her bowl. I spray her a couple times a day, and she drinks it off her nose, but that’s it. Hopefully the parazap can help with this!

Hates baths or not, you should still give them to her 2-3 x a week, lol, she will be very dehydrated without some form of water, misting is ok, but will not keep her hydrated...don’t give up on the greens! And yes, the ParaZap will help with her, and well keep her well hydrated, you just have to get it in her, lol...good luck!

I hate the thought of loosing a well loved pet... and sucks to see it happen to others. Thats why I take it so to heart. I LOVE animals... sorry.
Im glad you turned it off!!! thats great, and I hope she continues to do better. I would, even though she dont like them, force her in the bath. It will help hydrate her. :) I was starting to fear you wouldnt get the message till it was too late. WHEW. ....

I agree, your BD doesn’t hate you, i would say it is due to the harmful light that she is acting this way, like i said same thing happened to my boy, normally he is a sweetheart, but wow, i couldn’t believe the difference in him, i would go to pet him and he would hiss at me, or take off running and he was very scared, it’s like he wasn’t in his right mind and he didn’t know who i was anymore after having him for a year!! It broke my heart! This light does nasty things to them, but don’t worry, she will come around now with the proper lighting, just give her some time, and keep us updated on her condition ok?

Nancy.

Hey everyone! Things are slowly improving with my BD. I’ve been leaving her cage outside for quite a while during the day so she gets some natural sun and UVB rays. It’s about 95 degrees out, so she loves it. She doesn’t like when i hold her still, but she doesn’t hiss anymore. She just runs away and then calms down when I get her. I definitely think things will improve in the future!
