 Temperatures and Stress

Hey there, usually over at the WD forums but thought i’d waddle over.

So got 2 new beardie babies last week, 8 days ago actually. Both females in a 30 gallon long right now. (we’re tiling and grouting the 5longx3Wx2H tank right now, figured it would be too big for them to catch crickets too.)
they have uvb (man had to go to a different town all together to get the reptisun *dies* ) tile for substrate and varies hides and basking spots.

so my question is, what should i do with my temperatures. I’m using a household bulb right now and its offering me a range of 93.4F-101F, to me I think it could stand to be a little warmer for the babies. So I changed it to a basking sptlight bulb, and it offers me a range of 110-113F. But thing is i’m afraid they dont like it, they sort of just sit on the side of the basking rocks or to the side of it.

am i just being a silly mommy in worrying? and when they want to bask in the warmer spot they will? I don’t want to stress them out anymore as they are already stressed with the move here. these are all temps taking at the surface of the basking rock, with my probe thermometer.

oh also one of my babies is still really stressed. i’ve seen her eat a few crickets, ate some collard greens and bak choy, and i cut up a superworm in quarter pieces (i used the white just molted ones)

She still has really vivid stress marks and just doesn’t seem to be settling in at all =(
But the other little lady is bright happy and hops around ready to explore and hunt. I know her character in the first place is a really shy dragon, but i’m getting worried now.

Hi Tarkah,

Yes, i have seen you alot on the WD forum, lol, but welcome to our neck of the woods!! lol...

Anyway, like i tell everyone with new beardies, it will take time for them to Adjust, do not worry, they will be fine...So how long do you plan on housing them together? It may work out for a while, and some females do fine together, but there is always the chance of a fight breaking out one or both of them getting injured...Just thought i would let you know, lol...

You said you have the Reptisun, is it a long tube? I am sure you are aware of the harmful ones correct?

Ok, about the temps, for babies the temps at the basking spot should be 110-115f, the air around the basking spot should be mid 90’s, and the cool end should be mid 80’s...So, the temps you have of 110-113 is great and they will use it, but what you could do for them is to offer multiple basking spots with different temp gradients, with the highest temps being 110-115, i do this for all my dragons, and even my adults will use high temps at times of 110, if they get hot they will move to another basking spot of 105 ish, but thats for my adults, do the same for the babies, as long as they have their high temps they will be fine, and will use them..In the wild beardies will only bask for a short time and head for shade, so if they do not bask all day, it’s fine, they tend to overheat at times and this is why it is so important to have a cool side and shade for them...They will bask at temps to best suit their needs, do not worry...

And some babies in their new homes will not eat and will be stressed for a few weeks, just make sure they stay hydrated, bathing, misting, etc...

You will be a great mom, lol, no worries...

Do you offer supliments in their diet?

Nancy.

Sorry very quick reply here!

I ws tlking to their breeder and was going over the option of housing them together so she put them together for me since they were 3 weeks old. Apparently people have a better chance of housing two females together if they start housing them at an early age. I wouldn’t even try putting two adult females together ack.

But along with the 5Lx3Wx2H i think its 110 gallons? i’m not sure, more used to talking dimensions than gallons. I have another of the same size tank in the garage waiting just in case

Yes ommgg, nooo one in my town has reptisun. We used to have Superpet (not sure if they had it over where you live?) they used to have all the reptisuns. So I had to go ask my parents when they went out of town to pick one up for me. Every other store had either compacts or reptiglos. which makes me kinda shiver at the fact that how many people in this city own herps with reptiglos. ackk.

Alright i’ll add a few more basking spots and take the temp of that. i wish i had a temp gun

I’m so glad my babies love their baths, funny thing my WD’s are more skittish in the bath then they are! haha

Yup they’re getting pure calcium dusting every second feeding. and vitamin dusting once a week. should i up that twice per week?

Thanks a bunch for the help and reassurance Nancy!

Your very welcome..

It’s good you have a spare tank, as they age you may need it, lol. i was reading a while back of how someone always house two females together and a fight broke out while they were on a basking log, one fell off and broke her back, it can be done with females, but it’s a big risk...

About the compacts and coils, i know, they are still being sold everywhere! sad...When i picked up my WD last week, they were trying to get me to buy a compact!! LOL, i basicly told them everything i knew about these lights, and gave them a website to view, buit i doubt if they will make the change...it’s just to sad....

Temp guns are great, and also those infared thermometers, basicly point and shoot, lol...i use those..the probes are pretty acurate though, reads the same and the infared thermometers...

Vitimans, yes, i would give the multivitiman 2 x a week, until they are 4 months, then once a week...

Nancy.

LOL!! haha come joooiinnn us maybe this post will turn out to be one as well haha

Yah i’ve read stories like that too but, so far it seems that female/female fighting is pretty rare, and that it mostly happens when they are introduced already sexually mature. I see alot of instances where people house two males not knowing their gender and then the over dominating male with the female. Though i also read alot of breeders and stuff that successfully house two females, so i’m keeping my fingers crossed.

What frustrates me more is when i talk to other owners who say they are experts and have been keeping herps for far longing than i have been alive, tell me that my information is bogus and that they are perfectly fine. and it just turns out to be a big argument. me being stubborn and angry just wanting to give up and let them learn their lesson, but then i feel guilty for their herps. bleh.

She still has stress marks, cept when she just wakes up or is sleeping and peaceful and sometimes just out of the bath

Oh and a totally random and out of the blue question. How much was shipping for your new baby form Dragon Tales?

Thanks a bunch Nancy, and i don’t think this one counts as an essay

Hi,

Well, i wish you good luck with your females, at least you do have a spare tank, just in case, lol...

Yea, those darn stress marks, lol...usually when they are sleeping they are not stressed, and most times you will see their true colors while they sleep as well...When one of my males sleeps, by morning he is all yellow, it’s gorgeous, then the lights go on, and he turns a little dark again, lol...

About The Dragons Tale, shipping cost me 90$, yep, a little pricey, but well worth it i say, lol...

Nancy.
