 Sunshine in a bottle?

I would like to ask the opinion of y’all on a product made by T-rex. I have had a customer ask for it, but I have never heard of it, and with what it claims, I wouldn’t trust it yet. It is called solar drops, and is touted as liquid UVB. Had anyone tried it, and what is your opinion of it? I am posting this message on several forums for reptiles that require UVB light, I hope I am not stepping over any boundaries or restrictions. If I am, or if you would like to discuss this product privately, please feel free to PM me. Thanks for your opinion,
Richard

I have never heard of it. I honestly dont see HOW it would replace sun? The only way we can replace sun...is by a tanning bed, which is UVA/UVB tube lights.
So, I am interested to know more... but honestly, I dont think I am a pro supported. LOL

I looked it up, and it’s liquid vitamin D3. I’d be worried of overdosing.

Here’s a description I found online:

Quote:

Solar Drops are designed to deliver a regular controlled dose of natural dietary cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) to your captive reptile. Solar Drops solution, are for diurnal (daytime active) species of reptile.

Avantages of Solar Drops
-Eliminates the need of expensive UVB lighting systems or other vitamin D3 supplements.
-Prevents and reverses Metabolic Bone Disease in captive Green Iguanas and other lizard, turtle and tortoise species.
-Uniquely palatable formulas for diurnal (daytime active) reptiles.
-Tested and proven at captive reptile breeding farms around the world.

Today there are a number of fluorescent lights designed to give out some artificial u.v.b. irradiation. These devices are made to a relatively low specification so that they are both safe and legal for domestic use. As a result, their u.v.b. output is ridiculously low. Using a special u.v.b. light meter, detection is zero at distances of more than 12 inches. For maximum reptile benefit, they would actually have to be able to sit on the light itself. If placed at the top of an average vivarium, the light’s use is at best psychological and, at worse, useless for the reptile’s physiology of cholecalciferol synthesis.

The makers of these u.v.b. lights claim to "help prevent" metabolic bone disease and to "strengthen and improve" shell growth in turtles. Note that they do not claim to cure these problems. Solar Drops will cure both of these conditions, effect successful reproduction and allow all your reptiles to thrive and not just survive.

After reading this, I would not use it.

Thanks to all for the info and opinions. After reading this post in all the forums I posted it, it seems no-one would use this stuff. Maybe I’ll try it and see if I get a good tan from it.

LOL -- good luck! I will agree.. it is more of a V not UVB. My point.

These Solar Drops boast that they can be used instead of UV lighting, but it sounds like they would only replace UVB. What about UVA? That’s important for reptiles too. UVA makes lizards more alert and gives them a better appetite. I definitely wouldn’t use Solar Drops.

Hello,

What you have to be very cautious about is the synthetic D3 amount in this product. It is very easy to overdose on this product.
No supplement will replace good quality UVB lighting & to try to can cause destruction to their organs due to oversupplementation. You are better off using UVB in conjunction with a calcium with D3 powder if you use a flourescent tube light & if you use a MVB then only straight calcium with NO D3.
This method is much safer.
