Hello ~ New to the Forum

Hi everyone! I decided I’d better finally make a post and introduce myself. I’m fairly new to the beardie world. We got our little baby on April 12th and was 6 weeks old. I just got confirmation yesterday that our little one is a GIRL. We had named him/her Spike (well, my oldest son did), so now we are searching for a new name. I had like Hedwig, from Harry Potter, but the family doesn’t, so the search continues. lol

Here’s a picture of my girl.

I look forward to getting to know all of you.
Kathy

Welcome to the forum! Your baby looks good. If you have been here long, you know that you can ask about almost anything and get an answer, and that alot of ppl on here have many, many different opinions about things. But we are all good ppl and just want to help. So come on in and grab a piece of the floor and join the conversations.

Hello ~ New to the Forum

Thanks Sairhead 21 :)

Nancy ~ I just heard back from the breeder a little bit ago. Here’s what they said:
Our bearded dragons are a cross between a sandfire yellow and a red gold/fire tiger. If his head is showing more yellow, he will be sandfire, If his body shows a lot of orange, he will be a redgold.

When ’NIM’ is mellow and relaxed, she’s a nice cream color, so I’m guessing that makes her a Sandfire.

"NIM is the current name for her. LOL"

Hello ~ New to the Forum

I don’t have a MVB, but when I make/or buy her a bigger enclosure, I was thinking of getting that. As for taking her outdoors....Ummmm....I did that the other day and she nearly jumped out of her skin. I felt SO BAD. We live near a small airport and our house is in the direct path of the landing strip. We are so close that it’s probably .5 mile or less away from our house. The planes are very LOUD and sometimes we think they are going to land on our house. LOL Well....I completely forgot that when it’s a beautiful day out...the planes are really busy. I took Nim outside to get some real sun...she was in a really big rubber maid container (wasn’t sure what to put her in). I had a towel in the bottom, a hide and a screen over the top. I put the container partly in the sun and part in the shade. I sat there with her and talked to her the entire time. It was her first time outside and she was really unsure of things. Wouldn’t you know it, the LOUDEST plane flies over and it was really close to the house (probably only 60-80 above us). Oh my gosh!!! Nim, freaked and turned nearly black. I was so scared for her. I gently picked up the container to take her back in and she freaked again, puffed up and hissed at me. Oh my!!! I know she hears the planes, but since she’s never seen one, it had to be the scariest thing for her. I’m not sure if I should take her outside again because of that...or do you think she’ll get used to it? What do you think? Was the container a good thing to put her in? I can’t put her in the grass because it’s been treated. I’d LOVE to see her color really show up though.

Thanks for the liking her name. Have you seen the movie NIM’s Island? That’s where I got it from. There’s a Beardie in the movie named Frank. It’s cute!! Most of it’s computer generated, but you can tell when it’s the real beardie.

Hello ~ New to the Forum

Hey Kathy, btw, i have a sister named Kathy, lol...

Anyway, be very careful with her in a rubbermaid, she may over heat in there, and you do know screen will block some uvb rays right? The plane thing, wow, that sad, yea it would be really scary for her, and it’s to bad the grass has been treated, unless you could get her a iggy harness and take her for a little walk, lol, i don’t think she will ever get over the plane noise if it’s that loud...thats a bummer!!! lol...

No, sorry, never saw that movie, but i do love her name, lol...

Nancy.

Hello ~ New to the Forum

Nancy ~ Hmmmm, harness? I could do that. Walk on the driveway or sidewalk...or just on our deck? Is she too young to wear a harness, she’s 5.5 months? Thanks for the tip on the container. I won’t put her in that again. I wish I had a play pen. Maybe I could just hold her...if she’ll let me do that for that long. I ’think’ there are certain times of the day when it’s ’no flying’. I’ll have to call the airport to find out when that is and take her outside then. If I do take her for a walk, should I bathe her when I bring her back in?

Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for your help!

Hello ~ New to the Forum

Yep, harness is great!! lol...You can walk her wherever you would like as long as it’s safe, lol, or you can even keep her in your arms...yes, the harness will fit, they are adjustable...

The bathing, you do not have to bathe her when you come in, but 2-3 x a week is good for bathing, to keep her hydrated and all...

Don’t be sorry for asking questions, i love to help!

Nancy.

Hello ~ New to the Forum

Thanks Nancy! I’ll be going out to get a harness this weekend then. My neighbors will get a chuckle out of seeing me walking Nim. LOL

and...last night it didn’t work out for me to try and snuggle with her. With it being summer, by boys are so hard to get to bed. Lights out for the reptiles doesn’t mean lights out for them yet. Tonight I actually had everyone settled down and I was just about to get Nim out, when my 2 little ones ( ages 5&6) came running up to me. So, I tossed that idea out the window yet again. Maybe tomorrow night...
I did get to pet her in her sleepiness and she was fine with it

Hello ~ New to the Forum

Yea they get scared quite easily, when i take mine out in the back yard and if i leave the door open, even loud noises comming from the house {the hubby making iced caps in the blender} lol, scares the crap out of them, and yea, if a plane happens to be overhead they will freeze up and try to hide in the grass, lol...poor babies, no peace for them out there at all, lol...but for the most part it’s nice and quiet and Spike loves running around in the grass, i can barely keep up with him, lol...

Hello ~ New to the Forum

Thanks Chris! Good to see you buddy!!! How are you?

Nancy ~ I’d love to have Nim run around in the grass. My lawn has not been treated for 2 months....how long should I wait before allowing her to go in the yard? Would it be fine next year (summer)?

**and my son corrected me...the beardie in the movie is named Freddie...how dare I make that mistake. LOL**

You know, i will have to look that up b/c i am really not sure and wouldn’t even want to guess and put your baby in harms way, Before i had my dragons, like 2 years ago, the hubby used to treat our grass as well, but haven’t done it since, {cause i won’t let him} lol, but my guys NEVER eat any grass out there or whatever, they just don’t, lol, i will try and find out for ya though, and maybe someone lurking around here has a correct answer for that...

And CP, it is great to see you pop in on us once in a while, you are missed bud...

I just watched that movie for the first time a few days ago. I thought it was pretty good, but it annoyed me that they made the bearded dragon sound like a parrot. I guess they thought it would be boring if it acted like a real beardie and made no sound at all.

Hello ~ New to the Forum

Yeah, that part is annoying...it’s playing right now. Your right though, they prob did that so the beardie wouldn’t seem boring. My boys LOVE to watch it and they just love the beardie and all his antics.

Most of what they do in the movie is pure entertainment...which is sad that they portray the animals like that. It always causes people to want these herps and animals and then when they get them they are disappointed and then the herps/animals suffer.

Cute movie though.

Hello ~ New to the Forum

Hi Kathy,

Got some info for ya about the treated grass...This is what was said, and she is highly respected and is a vet...

Quote:

Hello Nancy, Hm, well I am not really sure on a timeframe but it should grow out for several cycles anyway, to ensure that it has grown out of the grass anyway. I would think it would take an entire season for the soil to be completely clean of pesticides, depending on how much they put on it.

I tried looking it up as well, and really can’t find a good enough answer...but i think what she has said, says it all, lol...

Nancy.

Hi Lacerta17. Thanks for the Welcome. Yeah, I probably will want another one :)

Nancy ~ thank you so much for looking into that for me. The treatment we had was professional, so it may have been strong, that was in May or June. We tend to get a lot of rain in the fall and then again in the spring, so I’m guessing by next summer, the yard will be safe. I appreciate your help!

Hi Tarkah!!!

Yeah, I like Hedwig too. The boys are stuck on Nim and I like that name too. I should really call her ’fussy butt’. LOL I tried to pick her up tonight at lights out and oh NOOOOOOO, she wouldn’t go for that. I guess tomorrow it will another bath...I see some more shed and hopefully that will relax her and I can get some one on one with her then.

your names are cute too..maybe for the next beardie I get. LOL
