 New to dragons!!!!!

I do not have one right now ,but I am very interested in these guys. I know what they eat I just want to see if I am right on the things I have been told, LOL.

They need UVB lighting and they shouldn’t be on sand or any other loose substrate.

I also have one other question can 2 live together for a while?
What size of a tank would they need to be able to live out their whole life?

Thanks in advance!!!!!!

 New to dragons!!!!!

okay to help you out ill give youa quck run down

babys need 20g long tank till about 12 inches at that point then you need to upgrade to a 40g breeder its wider thena normal 40g can get this at any petstore its for reptiles. they run like 90 bucks only thing is if your guy is just a baby a 40g can be a bit to big so if you got a 10g or something to put him into till he grows a bit then you can transfer him to a 40g once he gets a little bigger.

eating: 3x a day 15 minutes each must be pure calium dusted each time as much as they can eat int hat 15 minute period. you usea non d3 calcium dust every day like i said and then you use a d3 vitamin dust 1 a week or 1 every 2 weeks . they eat crickets roaches or silk worms as there staple diet everythign eles use on ocasion. gut load them if possible. they can go through 1k of live feeders a week it is possible depending on what you use.

lighting: need temps of 110-115 as baby’s in basking area and need cool side of 80 cool side will always stay the same. when they get older the temps will drop down to 100-105 and 80 coolside . there is also a need for uvb . there are alot of balbs that can hurt your dragon when it comes to uvb due to being poorly made. only ones that are safe for your dragon now are repti glo 8.0 or repti sun 10.0 please take notice to what blab is which when buying so yu dont get the confused like i did XD .

living situation: its not wise to house 2 dragons together even for a short period of time. if they dont kill each other in combat then there is a chance that one will become more dominate over the other and kill off any food intake form the one resulting in one becoming under nurished and possible death. so its best to keep them seperate bearded dragons like ther privacy lol.

veggies: collards mustard dandelion turnip greens and squash are really good for the dragon they are very high in calcium. and these are ebst staple veggies. cut these up and make a salad its the best thing you could do for them. dont give them any spring mixs or onions *posion* or anything just stick to what is perfect. not only is it good but at a young age its best to give them good stuff helps to promote good growth and less stuborness as they get older! hehe.

we recomend that you do not use sand till you have more experience but your gonna do what your gonna do . so ake sure that it is the proper sand and try to wait till he is over the size 12 inches + with out the proper care and size requirment there can be serioius or deadly outcomes that comes to sand. the best thing you can use that is safe for your dragno is repti carpet paper towel news paper and or tile.i personly use tile as a basking area and use repticarpet for roaming areas. and when my repticarpet gets filled full of poo i switch it out with paper towerls as a back up!. btu this is what i do. my new babie is on apper towels cuz they are babies and they make such a mess so paper towels are best cuz it so easy to clean up. bunch it up toss it and relay a 3 sheeter lol

Welcome to the forums Saucier!

As an adult they should be housed in a 40 gallon breeder, as a minimum size. The larger the better. They def should never be housed together. A male could mate the female to death. 2 males will fight each other, possibly causing death. Usually, one of the dragons will become the dominant one & not allow the other to eat any food! Yes, u need the UVB & the best brands to go with are the ReptiSun 10 or the ReptiGlo 8.0. The UVB needs to run across the enitre length of the tank. You will also need a dome light fixture for a basking light to keep them warm so they can digest their food. Beautiful Dragons.com has great info on good/bad foods they can eat. Hope this helps some:)

 New to dragons!!!!!

Hi there,

You will need:

UVB...either the ReptiSUN 10 long tube, or the ReptiGLO 8 long tube, do not use any compact or coiled lights, they have been causing harmful health issues...also you will need a heat lamp, like a dome light and a bulb..

Supliments as follows..calcium with and withouD3, and should be Phosphorus free, and a Multivitiman..so a total of 3, Rep Cal is the best brands..

Food and water dish

A hide to sleep in or cool off

Something for a basking spot, rock or log

Digital thermometer with a probe, or a temp gun for acurate temp readings

For substrate use non sticky shelf liner, paper towel, repticarpet, or tile

Beautiful dragons.com has a great list for greens and insects

For a baby temps at the basking spot should be 110-115f, the air around the basking spot should be mid 90’s, and the cool end should be mid 80’s

A 40 gallon breeder will do an adult dragon all it’s life but bigger is the way to go as beardies like lots of floor space to run around, so do not clutter the tank with to many decorations

A baby beardie should be offered crickets 2-3 x a day, as much as he can eat in a 10-15 min period, and remove any uneaten crickets or they may chew and bite your baby.

They should be bathed 2-3 x a week, for 10-15 min, in luke warm water up to the shoulders...

Any more questions, feel free to ask, and good luck when you get one...

Nancy.

Thank you for the quick answers, LOL!!!!! I have one more question I have a standard 55g not being used would this have enough floor space for a adult?

If not I will def look for a 40 or 50 gallon breeder.

No, a standard 55 Gal, will not be big enuff, it isn’t wide enough.

50 gallon 36" x 18" x 19"
55 gallon 48" x 13" x 21"

A 50 Gal would be big enough, I would think. You want to make sure that your tank is atleast wide enough for your Beardie to lay sideways in the tank with as little of him/her bending. I wouldn’t reccomend anything narrower than 18" for a full grown beardie.

Yes about the tube light, and make sure it’s either the ReptiSUN 10.0 or the ReptiGLO 8.0 tube, and yes, a basking lamp, you will probable have to test different whattages to get the temps correct though...

Thanks!!!!!! Now I just have to remember everything about feeding,LOL.

So you add calcium powder without D3 twice a day everyday and multi vitamin with D3 2 times a week.(when they are young)

and you lower it once they are older?

Thank you guys so much.

Right now I am waiting to see if any of the pet stores carry or can order a 40 or 50 gallon breeder.

I also noticed that some of the beardies at pet stores seem to have leg tremors or seizures, what is this normally caused from and how can you prevent it or help it?

 New to dragons!!!!!

its cause by lack of nutrition lack of proper uvb lighting lack of care and lack of knowlege. as long as you have the right knowlege you can keep this from happening. tho dont be discouraged. its a strong possibility if you get a dragon from a chain pet store that you will end up with a problem like this. they dont house there dragons under the proper uvb lighting they dont dust the calcium. 9/10 times the dragons sit there for months with about 5-6 other dragons! so you see it crap how the treat them and we all know it. it be best to get your dragon from a local breeder or a non pet store chain.
