hehe nancy name is only on here alot because she is on here alot be 90% of us are good enough to awnser this question here. the fact is walnut shell is very bad for your dragon. if he/she eats one of these shells they could possibly get impacted or even worse die due to internal injurys. yes you can us sand but we only recomend it to people who have had more then one beardie with good experience with them. you have to keep you husbendry up because there is still a high chance of impaction if things are done right with sand. your dragon should be at least 12 inches for first time sand users we dont really recomend anything smaller do to the risk tho some people still do. if you decided you wanna try it then use playsand dust free. sift of any big chunks of sand and anything thats not suppose to be in the sand before putting it in. if you are going to do this please do the research behind keeping your husbandry clean enough and hot enough for your dragons survival.

Hi there,

The walnut shell is VERY bad for them, if he happened to eat one piece of that it could kill him, he wouldn’t beable to digest it would rip his insides open...there has been alot of dragons who have died from this, i would ditch that asap...

Sand, ok, well, my 7 month old is on sand/soil mix, but she is almost 20 inches long, lol..if you are going to use it, make sure it is washed and sifted, and your temps have to be spot on or he won’t beable to pass it if he happens to eat some {and he will}, what i have done for my 3 dragons is given them multiple basking spots with the surface temp being around 120ish, and there are alot of temp gradients in there, my female will bask at 110f temps for a while, then she will move to a cooler area/basking spot, of about 107 or so...she does use the high temps often, and is always able to poop, and my males do the same thing and they are all fine....if your temps are not correct, your beardies may become impacted from the sand, it’s risky if you have never used it but if you are to use it make sure the temps are spot on in there...

Nancy.

I agree with everything that sham said and want to stress a point he just touched on.

hot enough for your dragons survival.

Sand will absorb and dissipate ALOT of heat, I used sand for Alucard, and at 20 inches from his basking spot a 250 Watt spot lamp could barely keep the sand surface temp hot enough for him. The ambient air temp also suffers srom the heat absorbtion by the sand so if you do use sand, be prepared for some funky stuff with your temps. I don’t know how the glass in the aquarium will affect the temps as I have a custom wood enclosure. So just keep a close eye on temps if you switch to sand.

And btw, you can have it as deep as you want, and if you are to use it, it must ALL be changed out at least once a month, and must be spot cleaned everyday...

With repticarpet you should get 2 pieces to fit his enclosure, then you can just change it up when needed, yes it can be washed, either by hand or in the washer, but it do tend to shrink in the washer...
