 Beardie questions, Thanks!

Hello,

I am not new to beardies, I actually have done tons and tons of research, and I have owned one. I moved a few mo ago and had to give mine up because my apt wouldnt let me have it. But now I am in a diff apt and I can have one.I was thinking about getting a beardie from a private breeder of high quality crimsonX crawley reds, but I went into pet smart today and they have adorable baby beardies, just got them today. My question is...are pet store babies hard to get to live? Also is the exo terra repta glo MVB any good? Any opinions are welcome. Thanks

 Beardie questions, Thanks!

it depends on the conditions they are living in at the petstore. i’ve heard bad things about house petsmart houses their bearded dragons, a few others on here can back that up and have more first hand experience with it, as i havent. if you can afford it, get your dragon from a breeder because then they are far more likely to have a clean bill of health than if you bought one from a petstore. also, you but be prepared for possible vet bills due to a sick baby from the petstore, so its your call. but i would stick with the breeder, personally.

 Beardie questions, Thanks!

i work at petsmart and compared to the other pet stores around where i live, like pet supplies plus and pet lovers, we are the best around! i cannot vouge for other petsmarts but at the one i work at our housing is just fine! i actually bought my beardie from there and he is doing great!! i dont know if this is just because i work there so i take special care of our reptiles or not, but i know petsmart has guidlines on how we house our reptiles and our care sheets that we follow were created by qualified vets! we have uvb’s and basking lights in all our cages, unlike pet supplies plus! we take very good care of our animals in our store, i make sure of it! if one animal has even a scratch on it we take it to the vet!! i do admit that a breeder would be better than a petstore but if you cannot afford an expensive breeder a petstore is fine as long as they are being housed properly and look and act healthy!! no pet store is going to be the same so please dont give all the petsmarts a bad reputation!!

It depends, some pet stores keep there babies in very good conditions while others do not...if you get one from a pet store or anywhere really, if the baby hasn’t gone through it’s first shed it may not live due to the stress it causes them, wherever you get it from make sure it is at least 6-8 weeks old...i got my female from the dragons tale at 6 weeks old, shes OGG x cawley red, and shes gorgeous! and very healthy when she arrived, she was very friendly at that age, ate greens like crazy, lol, and was very alert. If you do get one from a pet store look for signs of a healthy dragon which should be the tail curled up with the point towards it’s head, it should be alert and the eyes should be fully opened, and not half closed, or laying down with the tail laying on the ground, basicly, if a dragon is sick, it will look sick. Also check for missing toes or limbs....As for MVB’s, the Mega Rays are best from what i hear, i use the Hagen Solar Glo MVB’s from reptile supply.com, those are great!...Good luck..

Nancy.

 Beardie questions, Thanks!

Both of my dragons came from PetSmart, and the first one died within 48 hrs of being brought home due to gutrot. When I took it back they were very kind, offered me a replacement beardie or my money back. I took the replacement and got a good one that lived for over a year. He wasn’t hard to keep alive, and he was very friendly when I got him home. In the unlikely event of me ever buying a reptile from a "big box" petstore, I would go back to that PetSmart. BUT, knowing what I know now, I personally would try to find a reputable breeder that has good stock.

 Beardie questions, Thanks!

I agree with everyone about the breeder, however I did get a baby this morning from petsmart. I got there just in time too, because they had just fed them mealworms, I got a baby that was basking and not eating in hopes that he hadnt eaten any. He is pretty scared right now but very lively, curled tail bright eyes, he will not eat crix but he just got home. He also went from a 5 gallon tank with 3 other baby beardies to a 20L with no other beardies, so I hope he will acclimate. Thanks for everyones opinions, and I will post pics soon. Any advice is much appreciated.

Never feed meals, i’m sure you know that, they are to hard for them to digest, he probable won’t eat for a few days until he gets used to his new home, and try not to handle him to mush for a few days, let him get settled in first and good luck! If you have any questions, feel free to ask...Do you have everything for him he will need? Proper uvb, supliments, heat lamp, etc? What substrate do you have him on?

Nancy.

He has a 60 watt spot lamp, still measuring temps and I may have to get a higher wattage. He has a 10.0 UVB strip until he gets in a bigger tank then he will have a MVB. He is on paper towels. I offered chopped mustard greens, zuccini, small amt of parsley and carrots. I also have small crickets. I have mutivit, calcium, and calcium with D3. I plan to dust in calcium 5 days a week, d3 once, and herpitive once.

Sounds good, is the uvb a reptisun tube? If you go to beautiful dragons.com, there is a great list of greens and insects, some of what you stated are just meant for treats, go easy on carrots...

I couldn’t find a repti sun, it is actually an exo terra. and I did go sparingly on the carrots and parsley.

Thanks

There should be a stamp on the bulb, if it’s a reptiGLO 10, you will need to shut it off asap due to these causing serious health issues...all compacts and coils are harmful as well, the reptisun 10 long tube, or the reptiglo 8.0 long tube are the only safe ones along with MVB’s...

I will have to order it online, none of the pet stores around here have one, they have all told me that the 10.0 has overtaken the 8.0, and no one carries repti sun. Should I use the repti Glo 10.0 until I get the new one in??

Thanks

Shut it off, i bumped a post for you about this light, if possible take your beardie outside for 30 min a day, for natural sunlight...The reptiglo 10 almost caused my males death last year, he had eye problems, stopped basking and eating, became really lethargic, and started having crazy fits, almost seizure like...they are very harmful as well as compacts and coil lights as well....there have been alot of other cases as well...

If its a reptisun 5.0 it will work for now but those are not strong enough in giving enough uvb rays...but it will do until you get the new one...

 Beardie questions, Thanks!

Amen! I work at a petsmart too and I bought my beardie from our store and it has done wonderful. Infact since I’ve had her home she has grown 3 inches in 25 days and now eats about 45 to 50 crickets a day plus her greens. Once I started working there I researched the reptiles that we carry and tryed to learn all I could about each one and do my best to give the best advice I can when people are purchasing reptiles from us. Some people take your advice and others don’t. The ones who don’t and something goes wrong they always blame the petstore instead of themselves which isn’t fair but that’s life. If the habitat their in looks good and has proper lighting (heat and uvb) and the dragons look healthy then I see nothing wrong with purchasing them there. Talk to the employee who takes care of the reptiles and see if they been eating good. We’re the same way if anything goes wrong with our animals or their eating is off they are pulled from the slaes floor and taken to our vet. Once they have their follow up visit and things are back to normal they can return to sales floor. I love my job and I love working in the pet care dept. and the reptiles are my favorite. Everyone who works in the pet care always has their speciality so ask the employees and they will tell you who is really good in each area or at least at our petsmart they do. Can’t speak for every petsmart because it really depends on the individual pet care manager. And there is nothing wrong with buying from a private breeder either but research them too and make sure they are a reputable one. Good Luck!

Congrats on your new beardie! We got Izzy from petsmart and he just turned 2. I definitely think it helps that he had only been there for 2 days when we got him. We went back a few weeks later and his unsold clutchmates were in pretty bad shape.

Right away, they should be soaked in luke warm water, up to the shoulders, 2-3 x a week, for 10-15 min, adding warm water as needed...

Hello, I just thought I would let Everyone know how my beardie is doing. I got him on August 1, so his name is august. He is eating good now, at least 30 crix today, and I sprayed him and he drank as I sprayed him, I didnt want to stress him by bathing him yet. I will bath him tommorrow, and take him out to get UVB. He is a sweet little guy, but he still wont eat greens.

Hello all,

I took August outside for a bit today, and he turned ORANGE, I guess that is a good sign that he is going to be colorfull. He is still eating about 15-20 crix a day but no veggies. I spray him 2 X a day now and he licks the water off his snout.

Here are the pics as promised

I offer him crix 2-3 times a day but yesterday he would not eat them everytime. Today he did much better, he ate both times that I fed him for a total of 20-25 crix. He is catching up. I am thinking about ordering him some pheonix worms!
