MVB Bulbs info
Please chime in if you have something to say about the brand/s you have experience with. Why I bought a Mega ray I have tried to read all the info I could about MVb’s in the recent months. And now that I have one I have slacked off a bit. I know what I found and I know some of the poor ones out there. Many brands I considered purchasing at one time or another...because I knew the only MVB I had was about finished. I searched the web for specs ... I looked on E-bay for cheap prices. I stumbled across Mega Ray, T-Rex UV heat, Power sun and Sun seeker( never buy a sun seeker) ...and even today Nancy dropped another name, which caused me to search it out. Hagen ...a well known company in the aquarium / fish circles. I had no idea they made / sold MVB’s. I looked in all the retail stores, at various specialty shops and "hole in the wall places" with dusty shelves. I found Power suns on a dusty shelf way in the back of an old store .....somewhat under priced and I thought... YES ...this is it !! I will come back next week after I research and I will buy it. I came back 2 weeks later and they were dusted off and re- tagged...the price doubled!! And believe me the bulbs were new but old, old stock. Now I own a Mega-Ray 100 watt SB(self ballasted)... I just could’t find any other bulb with the research and thorough testing and documented evidence to support a purchase. I felt it was about time I purchased some thing in the way of "The Best" for my reptile. And I hope I can pass on anything I learned to you... Beth you asked, Quote: what about Power Sun MVBs?
What would you like to know? I will post a picture of the box I received and the links to all the research, comparing the competition. The box is so clear as to the capabilities of this bulb, I have looked for clear easy to understand info on every package I found ...Nothing is clearer than this Mega Ray box!!... so simple to read... I would find something retailing in the reptile stores and it was always 49.99-59.99 bucks. just a bit much I thought to myself ...there must be a better deal. Oh well I still had time ....my MVB bulb was still ok ...only 8-9 months old..I had 3 months to go. Mega ray is sold on line direct for 39.99 and 10.00 shipping. I thought what the heck ...if I am gonna splurge I might as well take advantage of the shipping and get a temp gun too. So here I am all full of it and then some....lol
This chart is on every box Mega Ray ships...it shows the distance and micro watts of UVB out put and compares it to sunlight.
The other side of the box clearly states the longevity factor. And the fact that it’s decay rate is far less than the competition!
Here is the cool little temp gun ...quite handy I measure anything and everyone....lol Here are some links ...the studies are lenghty to read but I was just fascinated by it all...yeah I am a nerd... Not!! Link Link Thanks for allowing me to post this long wind.... Any questions I can answer or search out ...I will CP |

But I looked up the hagen bulb briefly ....need to investigate that some more ...i hadn’t heard of it untill you mentioned it. Special care ...wiping finger prints off it .... no switching off & on repeatedly ... No jarring and shock to the sensitive filament...no moisture contact directly to bub face....... never use a dimmer switch... Cp |

I dont’ use tanks and it has been a while since I measured them ...I remember my fish tanks were all 60 gallons and up and wre about 4 ft long and 20 inches tall and ??? deep Just do some tests with a 90 watt flood light and see how hot it gets ... at 12-13 " away and then measure the cool side too. With your new digital probe thermometer you ran out and got ...for 10 bucks . CP |

Since the advent of the self ballasted bulbs (SB) technology has allowed a regular screw base bulb to contain the ballast inside and eliminate the exterior box and added expense. The pros and cons to this are lower cost and ease of installation ..vs.. more delicate and with rough handling shorter life span. How does the powersun compare ...as with all the comparisons done by mega ray ...2 things are of primary interest ... The actual uW/c2 ( micro watts) out put as stated by the manufacturer and the decay rate from new to aged bulbs. I had a T-Rex UV heat and I knew it’s time was up so I started my quest to find pricing and quality that I could trust and feel re-assured was accurate.....What I found was Mega -Ray.... no one else has this info /test/ research...or dedication to the reptile/ animal world as these folks do. If this were a large scam to convince the consumer to buy their product i doubt that they would have spent so much time and effort to provide and inform us. Why are the labs and zoos hailing the products as better or exceptional? And the UVB/ Solar meter club ... folks measuring and recording data from natural sunlight and bulbs..I will join that soon when I receive my UVB meter. Here is a direct study chart concerning the POWER SUN and the out put and decay rate. Link As it shows a lesser degree of output and faster decay rate Mega Ray output is 2x the output of power sun and maintains that output far longer. In these pages are sooo much more ...I just can’t get enough .... Hope that is what you were looking for...... CP |

and the kickoff thing where it wont turn back on is a safety feature.. they wont turn back on right away because of how hot they get.. if they flicked back on automatically then theyre more likely to pop. sunseekers are terrible.. one popped on me.. no one was near it and we heard a sound like a gunshot.. it had exploded glass everywhere. bonzai was terrified and hid for a few days after. the only thing i can figure is that it had a weak spot and it finally gave out with the heat. on a side-note.. has anyone else ever used the exoterra mvbs?.. my beardies seem to be doing okay with them and a local shop has them priced at only 20.99 a piece.. so i picked them up and so far so good. |

Since construction has been so slow I took on a more than I could handle and whilst finishing one job ...started another. You know ...you would be a perfect candidate to puchase the SOLAR Meter 6.2 ...that way you could measure and test your bulbs...and never have any doubt about the UVB output. I know it is kind of pricey to buy one. 169.00 US = shipping...I want one sooooo bad. Also there is a solarmeter club you can join online and members close to you ...if any willshare and meassure your light / s output , that is what I understand , anyway ... Here is the link http://pets.groups.>>>>yahoo.com/group/UVB_Meter_Owners/ Additionally you need to watch this video on care and maintenance of your bulbs. http://www.you>>>>tube.com/watch?v=BPXjDvrv92g REMOVE THE ARROWS to make these work.... If you suspect a bad bulb ...and you have more than one ...play swicth the light with the other one and see if things change.... Miss ya all Cp |

I have often sounded harsh due to my zealousness to answer / help. I have to re-read what I am saying in order to approach questions with KID GLOVES for fear that my short and to the point answers aren’t’t misconstrued as aggressive/ angry.
