 PICS of IMPROPER COMPACT BULBS

Unfortunately ...all too often pet shops and stores will encourage you to purchase an easy to install / less expensive COMPACT UVB BULB.

Please understand that Both the 10.0 and 5.0 version of these bulbs are creating many problems for the reptile/s we love and keep, affecting their vision and health.

All species are affected, and because Bearded Dragons are so popular and sought after by young and old alike they are one of the most severely affected.....

I hope that you are fortunate enough to see this first and avoid the mistake so commonly made.
Until further research and studies reveal the problems are corrected I would steer clear of these items.

If you have any doubts just ask ..... I can imagine this thread will get rather long, we may have to have a separate thread just for the questions and answers ....lol

Best regards

CP

i use a type of coiled bulb but it isnt coiled like that one and i have never had a problem. when this whole UVB light debate started a while back i asked the herpetologist that owns/runs the place i buy my crickets from, because he also used the same lights and fixtures in his store and also said he never had a problem. so i trust his judgement.

they look sort of like those energy saver florescent bulbs but bigger if i remember correctly. but ive never really seen them in high enough output for beardies where i am.
though i found this weird dome fixture that you put a standard bulb in for heat and theres a florescent tube light that goes around it.

I can’t remember exactly, but I believe the one we’ve got is a reptiglo 10.0 for desert uvb. We’ve got the same kind of bulb only a 5.0 for tropical for our water dragon. It’s coiled like a spring and fits sideways in a special fixture since the bulb is so long. It’s not the one pictured above. Is this the one you’re using saralaise or are these bad too? We don’t use them all the time. Only intermittently if it’s raining and we can’t get them outside for natural uvb.

 PICS of IMPROPER COMPACT BULBS

Hello,

These coiled lights are still not good. While so far, on the initial testing, they have not had the photo therapy phosphor, they do have a very low UVB output. The amount of UVA is decent but the UV index is a little high in comparison to the overall UVB emissions.
The other problem with compacts & coils is that it does cause quite a bit of glare on their eyes so care needs to be taken if any are used & always be mounted overhead & be used in conjunction with bright white lighting.

I wont buy anything but the ReptiSun 10.0 Flor. tube light.
Good post.. there are MANY questions about proper lighting! There are so many dangerous things on the shelves sold in petstores anymore... it makes it so confusing and easy to buy something that may harm your dragon. :(
Sux...
