? on sexing a baby dragon

Out of curiosity I am trying something. When the babies started coming out I had an idea that if you can candle an egg then why can’t you candle a baby dragon to see what the sex is??? I tried it and when I did the first six or so I thought this wasn’t going to work and then I had one that I could see the two red lines by the tail. Has anybody tried this and has it work out accurately for anyone????

Hey,

Yea on some you can tell right away....Usually by the third week or so you should be able to sex them easier. The males are definitely easier to sex, just look for the two veins on each side of the base of the tail. Of course, sometimes they’ll hide it for a bit longer. lol

I kinda thought could be the case too. I will have to wait a couple weeks and try again and see how the ratio is then cause as of now.... only three males out of 11. I will keep posting about it till I can get a better idea.

Smart observation. At about 4 weeks you’ll see some have little bulges and "candle" dark red spots in the area as well. Those are your males.

That IS a cool idea...never would have even thought of trying to "candle" a baby!

The idea/technique has been around awhile. Two books came out this winter describing the technique and even using it on Varanids (notoriously hard to sex young animals).
