 A question on genetics

Ok, so Im trying to find how how breeding for certain traits works. Im panning on breeding my male Sandfire to either an orange colored Hypo, or and orange translucent. Im trying to figure out, mainly if I get a translucent, if some of the offspring will turn out translucent w/black eyes with sandfire traits, and half sandfire het. for translucence, and what the %het. is based on. How does this work? Im wondering if I should spend the extra money on a nice translucent to produce more translucent dragons, or if I have to breed 2 of translucent dragons together. Does anyone have a good article, website, or book they recommend on reptile breeding from a genetic standpoint? Im not looking to make a profit, I just want to do it cause Im fascinated by it, and would like to produce some cool looking dragon, the best of which I will keep. The others I will either sell for a small price, or even just give away and only charge shipping to ensure they go to a good home. Let me know if any of this doesn’t make sense lol, Im confused myself. Thank you!

 A question on genetics

I’m not totaly sure but I think that both hypo and trans are both co-dom genes and they are all the rave with breeders right now. I think that sandfire is also a co-dom trait but most if not all the babies will have sandfire features and some will be trans. so I think the pairing would be great. Nice deep red translucents would look awsome. Good luck and I hope if I’m wrong I don’t get hammered for it but like I said I’m not sure about it.

Ya, I thought it would turn out really cool looking. I was thinking of maybe going with a nice orange/red hypo/trans or translucent to get those black eyes! I love that alien look they have. Its so different. Some nice hypos would be nice too, but I really love the black eyes so Ill probably end up going with the translucent or hypo/translucent. Thanks for the input.

 A question on genetics

I’m pretty sure that translucence is a recessive trait, because I have a 100% het translucent and she exhibits zero traits of a translucent dragon. The % het system, as far as my knowledge of it goes, is a measurement of probability. If you breed a homozygous translucent dragon with one who carries only one allele for translucence, half of their children will be translucent and the other half will look normal. The normal-looking ones are 100% het because they are guaranteed to carry one translucent allele. If, however, both parents each carry only one translucent allele, 25% of the offspring will inherit normal alleles from both parents. Unfortunately, these look just like the ones who carry a single translucent allele. Since the breeder cannot tell these babies apart from each other, he has to call them 75% poss. het, because there is a 75% chance that they carry the recessive gene.
I hope that made sense. If I said anything that you don’t understand, please let me know and I will try to make it clearer.
