CLOSE TO LAY DATE BUT HATES BEING IN LAYBOX!!

My female dragon Lucy is very pregnant...she’s on her 17-19th day and I can feel the eggs...shes very heavy and wont stop running around and scratching...its driving me nuts actually.....but when I put her in her lay box she nose bumps the glass for hours without stopping, and I dont want to stress her out. She doesnt want to be in the lay box...she’s too much of a diva and doesnt like being dirty, what should I do? I have to work closing shifts and cant be at her beck-and-call all day.

MAIN QUESTION: How do I know when she’s definately ready to lay those eggs? She’s been getting worse everyday.

When I put her back in her regular cage all she does is pace and scratch like hell and try to escape....but she wont dig when she’s in her lay box....is she just playing with me? Should I just keep her in her lay box all day?

thankyou for any help you can offer. Lucy is driving me nuts with the scratching...like right now...AHHHH!

Nikke.

set up another ay box some dagons refuse the ones you set up for them just to be awkward, it could also be that she doesnt ike the substrate in the lay box, r the temps in the lay box, they can be very picky at times haha

I have to tell you that I believe she is showing all the signs of laying , and oftentimes if she does not lay she is not happy with her lay conditions. Tell me about her laybox. Take good care B

PIC of mine....

Don’t worry about the plywood. I just used the screentop to my Lucy’s tank to hold the heat light. B

k, everytime I put her in a sink bath...she opens her bum and scratches... I think she’s trying to lay her eggs....she only does that when in water though....should I let her lay them in water?

You never told me about your lay box....she should be able to lay if she likes her conditions...otherwise she may be eggbound...Beth

its a spare 30 gallon tank (36"x 18"x 12") filled with moist dirt, a mound on the left side with her heat light on top. Her tank is in our spare room....it’s quiet and secluded. We tried wrapping a towel around the tank...didnt make a difference.

I added a small container of water for her to bath in on the right side and she really liked that...but after 10 mins wanted out again.

So we bought a plastic container and just filled it with moist dirt...no mound, still no interest....she just wants baths and running into closets...I’ll post a picture of each in a few minutes.

thanks beth

I should also add that lately the weather has been absolutely stifling and humid, Lucy calms down in the evening when it starts to cool down.

OMG she’s huge, poor lucy, lol! Anyway, for my girl I packed a very steep slope of damp hard packed sand/potting soil. Only a small area at one end of the bin was not sloping....room enough for her to stand facing the slope. It has to be packed down HARD so it doesn’t cave in on her when she digs. I also started a hole for her at the bottom of the slope. When she was finally ready she didn’t waste anytime but she had been in and out of that bin for over a week! I’d leave her in there all day, back in her tank at night...when she started pacing and digging like crazy I put her back in the bin. Finally one morning within 10 mins of going in she had dug a hole where I started it, backed in and was laying!! I have 28 eggs due to hatch in the next 10 days - 2 weeks! Good luck!

Thank you very much for you replies I really appreciate it!!!!
Lucy seems better today. The temperature is much cooler today and she’s not digging or going nuts. I fixed her a third laybox this morning, one with a steep slope and a little bit of standing room. Hopefully she’ll like this one! lol

I have a vet appointment on monday for Nny, a rescue dragon my fiance and I took in 3 months ago and will be bringing Lucy along for a check-up just to be certain that she’s healthy and not egg-bound.

okay, so this is really weird. Lucy has been extra heavy the last few weeks...like double the mass, but today I came home and she was light as a feather.....I can still feel a few bumps in her belly, not not nearly as many as I use to. I searched her lay box and no eggs were deposited!!!!!! What the heck!!

The vet thinks that Lucy must have laid a few eggs and ate them....she gave lucy an injection to promote her to lay the rest of the eggs....and she’s digging right now so we’ll see what happens.

Wow, that’s a new one on me! Never heard of them doing that before but it would explain why she seemed skinnier and no eggs were found. I hope she lays the rest without complications. Good luck with her! Keep us posted.

CLOSE TO LAY DATE BUT HATES BEING IN LAYBOX!!

Lucy finally laid 20 eggs last night! 2 eggs were tiny and floppy, the rest were big, full and healthy!

It’s funny though, I put Lucy in her laybox and as usual she refused to dig, so I sat by her cage and started playing some Iron Maiden and she immediately started going at it....seriously digging like hell! So I kept the music on for her, because when I turned it off she’d stop digging and look back at me....it’s awesome and weird at the same time.

Lucy finally digging

after a good hour or so of digging Lucy finally decides to deposit her eggs

Done and dirty!

4 out of 20...good size.

The beautiful Father of the eggs

The very full mother

The babies are going to be gorgeous! And Im so happy everything went well.

The photo you posted of the four eggs look like they may not be fertile either....it could just be the lighting in the picture, though....time will tell, congrats on your eggs!!
