 Bruminating?

Ok well my female is almost breeding weight, from what I read it’s 340g, I wanted to wait till she was a little bigger than that to start the breeding process. So I am fattening her up and giving her lots of calcium just so nothing bad happens to her when I start breeding.

I have been researching and stuff so I know what I would be doing plus I know someone who will be helping me, he has been breeding bearded dragons for about 30 years, so he knows what he’s doing.

But what I wanted to know was what you guys/gals saw as mistakes when you started of which helped you out until now. In other words how have you progressed as a breeder, of bearded dragons, any mistakes that new breeders make that you guys/gals have and now know to stray away from.

Thanks.

He must be Bob Mallioux then, lol. There were no dragons here until the 80’s I believe, but anyway...

My biggest mistake early on was actually incubating every egg I got. It’s really just too much for me to handle and the expense of bugs makes it barely profitable at all. I now only hatch out 1-2 clutches per year (40-50 dragons) and it is MUCH more enjoyable not being overwhelmed or trying to ram too many into cages. That leads to toe and tail nips on one another no matter how much you feed them. Keep it simple and just hatch out one clutch the first year. Then you can progress if you want to. Despite lofty expectations, it takes months and months to sell all your dragons even when they are beautiful morphs or whatever.

Yeah I have noticed that it takes awhile. Or unless you are a good sales peron. I was going to trade one of my friends one or two dragons for some poison dart frogs. He has two different morphs. Blue Azureas and Bumble Bees.

Well he is my dad’s friend. He said that he knew a guy that recieved the first pair of bearded dragons from some zoo they were normals and he has been breeding them ever since. He knows some reputable breeders. I think it was either from sandfire dragons or from sunshine dragons. Wasn’t really paying attention to what he was saying.haha

Well it is almost about 30 years considering that we are in 08. All I know is he has been breeding bearded dragons for a very long time. He has been since the begining with only normals being available.

I also have another question. Well I breed crested geckos so I know that in one breeding season a female can lay 4 clutches. How does it work with bearded dragons? Do the male and female only have to couplate one time and she only has one clutch? Or is it multiple clutches during one breeding season like a gecko but in bigger quantities?

Am I making sense?lol

 Bruminating?

hey you guys....I am a hobbyist breeder and I do it because I love it....have a petstore arrangement but if you are looking to make any money you should probably listen to Krusty. I have to say Krusty that your name makes me LOL everytime because I think of what my kids use to say.....LOL. JK, I am really not...LMAO...sorry...anyway it is difficult to make a profit, I never have because of the numerous clutches that beardies have after one breeding....mine have gone 5-6 clutches, a clutch of 20+ every 20 or so days. You shouldn’t sell in my opinion until 1st shed....6-8 weeks...so you can most definitely have 60 babies at one time....I am not discouraging you...just reality. Krusty can breed & freeze if he wants to...that is something that everyone must decide on their own....everyone has opinions and I wholeheartedly respect him for his....Hey Krusty....Take care all Beth

 Bruminating?

Brumation usually happens to dragons that are over a year old- maybe closer to 18 months old......usually happens in the fall and early winter. They go off their food and sleep alot...it is normal...usually when my dragons are showing signs of brumating I will go to the vet and make sure they are ok because brumation can mimic parasites or other health issues. It usually means that you cut their lights off and cover their tanks, some people leave them alone...offer water and veggies, others cut lights back 3-6 hours everyday and offer food & water. Some adult dragons do not ever want to slow down...others need it....I hope this helps to answer your initial question...Take care Beth

Thanks for the brumination explanation.

Can anyone clarify the concept of the clutches? Since I am a little confuse. Is it just one time having sex and then one clutch? Or is it like crested geckos? One time having sex and 4 clutches arive?

Thanks. In my defense I didn’t catch you saying anything about multiple clutches in one coupulation session.

Thanks :)
