 Keeping incubation substrate moist

So I have eggs incubating in vermiculite in my home made incubator. The air in the incubator is very humid, as water collects on all the sides and top of the incubator. However, I feel like the vermiculite the eggs are laying in has lost much of its moisture. How should I go about keeping this moist? I have been hesitating to spray water directly over the eggs to re-moisten the vermiculite. Afraid this could "drown" the eggs. On the other hand, don’t want to move all the eggs, mix water into the vermiculite, and move the eggs back. Feel like that would be too much "commotion" for the eggs. Whatchall think?

Hi i was told to lightly mist the eggs often,i did this and had great success,Be careful not to over wet them, the eggs should dry within an hour or two.Barbs

Hey there, it is actually better NOT to mist the actual eggs, as there is a delicate air exchange that goes on through the soft shell, but instead mist the lid or sides, or tighten the spray and try to go between the eggs if you can. Good luck!

get a syringe and you can wet the vermiculite around the eggs easily.

dont know what kind of incubator you built so this is what i do.
use a deep container add 2 or more inchs of vermeculite then add 1 inch of water.
i put 1/8 holes all the way around the container 1 inch apart.
this will eliminate the use of a water dish and keep the inside of the incubator dry.

I use a syringe to add water to my vermiculite...not on the eggs but around them...some people say a fine misting is ok...although I have never tried it.. I watch the condensation line on the sides of my clear containers...if the line is below the level of the vermiculite its ok...if its above I release the lids, and let the heat absorb the excess condensation...Take care Beth

I do the same thing PureHate Jeff does ----- put containers in the hovabator so the metal and electrical components last. I have a custom made incubator that’s not a hovabator as well and just use the poultry one for overflow/emergency use now.

I lightly misted my eggs once a week or when ever the vermiculite was feeling dry (advice from an experienced breeder). As long as they aren’t still wet after a couple hours it won’t hurt the eggs. Mine are all hatching right now!
