 Babies Eating

Hey Everyone!

This weekend I had 9 babies hatch, 8 are in the cage and 1 is still in incubator. I still hvae 3 good looking eggs that have not hatched yet.

QUESTION: I offered about 1 dozen 1/8 inch crickets and they were VERY scared of them, THEY STILL ARE. So I offered abotu 1 dozen flightless fruit flies and they pay NO attention to them. Small choped pieces of greens were also offered, no interest.
Are there any tips on getting them to eat??? When should I notice them eating? Their yolk sacs are completely absorbed.
Any suggestions?

Hey there ! First of all, This is what I do and it has worked for all of my clutches...I don’t offer live prey for at least 5 days, even more, if I can get them to eat their greens. I put their greens with yellow squash through a food processor until chopped very little. I use lids to feed my babies, pringles lids, margarine, sour cream, etc. They have little sides. I drop pieces of greens from above and be sure they notice and drop it all around them. I then hold the lid under each one of their little heads for a minute and I do mean 60 seconds and move it from head to head. I then mist the greens on the lid with sterile water and put the lid on the cool side of the tank. I repeat this process numerous times each day. I use BN squash mixed with the greens as well as fresh green beans, sweet potato, and yellow summer squash.

P.S. By sterile water I mean that I boil water to go in my misting bottles...I boil it for 5 minutes or so and then let it cool..then add to water bottles. Take good care Beth

P.S.S. It is always good to have your babies eating their salads when there are no crix to be found and your shipment is long lost !!! LOL.

Beth - I offer greens and yellow squash on lids from day one also. They seem to get used to salads faster this way even though they still need a ton of bugs for growth (protein) for the early parts of their lives. I don’t know why you need to use sterile water though. Why do you do that?
