i have 2 beardies. they are brother and sister. the girl is about to lay eggs and people are telling me that some of the beardies that hatch may be disformed or may never grow because they are brother and siter. is that true???

Contrary to popular belief and human teachings to never do this, it usually produces normal babies. Doing it over many generations (hello .... that’s how "morphs" started) is asking for it and there are gazillions of beardies out there for not much money, so taking the chance (which is higher in direct relatives) that they both are carrying a recessive bad gene for something isn’t necessary. Separate the dragons from this day forward. The problem with poor reproductive output in leucistics is probably due to heavy inbreeding.

I want to say that I believe inbreeding is not good !!! I agree with the above post...possibly nothing will be amiss but separate them as soon as you can...I don’t want you to have problems and no one knows their lineages...Take good care B

If you have any ethics you would freeze the eggs from any inbreeding and separate the dragons immediately. Yes color morphs have been developed by this, but it is also the reason the dragon gene pool in this country is so poor.

First, separate your dragons! You should not be housing a male and female together in the first place, but especially not if you didn’t want to breed them and they are related (and I’m guessing the female is too young)!

Second, set up a lay box if she hasn’t laid the eggs yet.

Third, FREEZE THE EGGS!! Even if they do turn out looking normally, you should not be making more bearded dragons with smaller and smaller gene pools. People who buy them may end up just the way you did, accidentally (or purposely) breeding them, possibly even breeding siblings from your clutches. You have to look at every baby as adding to the gene pool, even if you won’t be breeding them yourself. Leave breeding to those who have experience, know what they are doing, and are working to breed morphs of diverse genetics.
