 About to start out...

I’m about to start my first breeding experiments with beardies. But I just would like to ask a couple of questions.

1. Climate change in my home if fairly extreme at times...up to 7 degrees celcius...are there comercial incubator which would cancel this out...or be able to handle it? Or is the best way just to make a very large one that wont have such an averse effect?

2. A lot of the sites and books talk about clutching...that a female can lay up to 5 clutches of eggs. Does this meen that they do the deed once and out pops up to 5 egg clutches...or do they need to do it 5 times? lol...I just want to make sure.

3. Some sites talk about artificially inducing a winter cycle to enduce mating times. Do you have to do this or will she automatically come into her special ready time? (lol, trying to be decent here). Also, I assume you should not enduce this more than once a year.

4. This question is a bit on the long side...but I have to explain what I have done so you experts can tell me if i it will work. I got a fairly old bookcase with shelves that are about 30 cm apart. I then compartamentalised them into sections of 30 cm making up the 90 cm the book case is wide. So on each shelf I have 3 compartments. Or I should say every second shelf. The top shelves hold the seperate lights I am using for uv and heat. In each compartment I have a glass screen door at the front. I also have my temps just right on the basking area (I used slate due to it’s nice heat retention) and I have a little hideaway. I plan to put between 5 and 7 babies in these compartments while they grow before I sell or donate them. The floors of these compartments I will most definitely put paper towels on gently misted. Is this a good idea...or is the space too little?

5. Last question, and this is propably the most stupid one cos I think I know the answer...do I need to "cut" the embilical chrod after they have consumed all the nutrients left in the sack of the egg...or will it automatically just get severed?

On your question about clutches, what the books mean is that after mating once, a female will lay up to five clutches of eggs.

on my blackberry so i gotta go one thing at a time. The yoke sac will absorb all on its own. Most of the time when they hatch the yoke is most of the way absorbed. -Jay

you dont have to induce a winter cycle, but if your male doesnt want your female this can help, and i wouldnt do it more than once a year it would be possible but if you have a succesful pairing you wouldnt have to because bearded dragons can retain sperm for upto a year, plus i mean if you think bout the five clutches from one pairing thats alotta strain to put on a female, i think what i was trying to say is now hard to understand, basically dont over breed your female they tend to loose weight after laying so its not worth pushing them too hard

thanks...I wasnt really considering it...but I want all the info before I start breeding my beardies :). I have 3 females I’ve had for about a year now...I want to get a male and see if breeding them is as much fun as having them :). But my major question is still about the comercial incubators...can they handle such a room temp shift? Also...the book case...that’s the question seeing as I dont want to do anything potentially harmfull
