 Nipping

The last time that I had baby bearded dragons I had some serious problems with tail and toe nipping. I intend to do some more breeding in the future, so right now I’m brainstorming for ways to deal with this problem. Anyone have any ideas/stories regarding their experience with this?

Hey there. How many do you keep together? Oftentimes this happens when another beardie sees movement and thinks its live prey...LOL. It is recommended that you keep only 5 per 20 gallon tank...even then it can happen...others say that they are hungry???I don’t know how true this is but you should offer the salad every day, before live prey and then give as many crix as you believe they need after watching their hungry little selfs...I offer salad because I believe its so important, one hour after light on at 0630 am. So sald at 0730- 0800.. I make sure they know the salad is there...then I wait until about 10 am to give the first crix of the day...for 5 dragons I drop approximately 100 crix. You have to observe them...some are more agressive than others...then at 4 pm I drop another 100 or so...I hope this helps...Take care b

I had 13 hatchlings in a 40 gallon tank, which I guess is slightly over the limit. (Hangs head in shame).
I’ve never heard about that limit before. Thanks!
I also appreciate the fact that you gave me such a precise feeding schedule. I did have some trouble figuring out when their feeding times should be. I will definately try out your recommendations.

After 6 weeks old we dont like to keep more then 3 per 20 gal tank but even then nips can happen... We have 2 hold backs from an earlier clutch together in a 20 even being over fed for there size they have nipped each other pretty good.. both are great dragons but they are half tailed lol. For any breeder it isnt realistic to think we can all house one baby per cage, and nips will happen. The best defense is to watch them closely and make sure not to leave smaller dragons in with larger ones. As the size differences between the babies become apparent just re-sort them so the smaller dragons get a chance to catch up. -Jay

i agree sometimes it just cant be helped, iv had clutches with no nips at all then other clutches the occasional nip it happens, id say it cant be to do with hunger, just keep em well fed altho saying that all my babies were constantly hungry.
