 Eggs in her poop???

Hello fellow beardie lovers. I am new here and have been reading through the breeding section and haven’t found this question asked yet. I had what I thought was a gravid female, we caught them in the act so I new she likely was and we could also feel the bumps in her belly. One day within the time that she should lay eggs, she started digging...digging like crazy. I put her in the lay box, she dug a hole right away, backed into in and....laid 2 eggs! I left her in there for 36 hours but she never did dig again. I put her back in her enclosure where she still is now. BUT...here’s the really strange thing and no one so far has had an answer. She keeps passing eggs in her poop! At least 8 of them now have come out when she poops...I broke open the one that came out tonight in the bath and it was like a hard boiled egg...the inside was hard and yellow. None of the eggs she has laid have been fertile. I thought the two she laid in the box without poop were, but I candled them and there was nothing. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? When I feel her belly in the bath there still seems to be about 5 or 6 more eggs in there. What should I do? Is she ok? She’s eating well so I’m not sure if I should be concerned. HELP!!

I would consider taking her to the vet. I didn’t catch exactly how long it’s been since she started laying, but she could very well be egg bound, which is a very serious and possibly deadly condition.

Is she separate from the male? Can you post a photo of her set up? What do you feed her, what supplements have you been giving her, and what type of UVB bulb do you use/how often do you change it?

I dont see how ANY of this has to do with the question being asked.. I understand your wanting to help him as you are assuming he doesnt know anything about what he is doing.. but.. maybe.. just maybe he does.. and your making yourself look like an who just wants to ream someone for their setup, as I have seen you do in the past!

 Eggs in her poop???

Thank you RP, I didn’t see how any of that had to do with my question either.

We’ve had the dragons for a couple years now, so I would like to think I have a good grasp of how to raise them properly. This is our first experience with a gravid female however, but I know enough to know that this ISN’T normal or common. Anyone I’ve asked always says "hmmmm". I’m not overly worried about her being egg bound because she is active and eating and drinking well. Also, she doesn’t have a "belly full of marbles" like most gravid beardies I’ve seen pics of...I can only feel a few left in her and she is quite skinny now.

I’m not trying to ream anyone. It has everything to do with her problems because if the dragon doesn’t have enough supplements, calcium, and UVB lighting don’t you think it might have problems laying eggs?

Anyway, I was in NO WAY attempting to be mean or suggest that you have any problems with your husbandry.

Also, try some extra silkworms (or a few wax worms) and up her calcium intake if she is skinny, though I’m sure you’re already doing this. I’ve never heard of them "pooping" eggs out...seems strange. Perhaps she just needs time? Have you used pedialyte in her baths?

It’s rare in BD’s, but she may have refused the nesting options you provided. They like to tunnel down deep and feel like they are not visible when they lay eggs/nest. If your nest was really not to her liking, it’s possible she is just popping a few out here and there when she strains to crap, but again, that is very unusual. If you cannot feel any more ’bumps’ in her and she eats, drinks and poops OK, then I’d just keep an eye on her and make sure you are giving her a good diet as recommended. A vet can xray her to see if any eggs are still in there.

 Eggs in her poop???

Thank you, that answer has made the most sense of any so far....and I’ve asked A LOT of people, lol. When I first put her in the lay bed she went to town! Dirt was flying, she was covered in soil, it was hilarious...she seemed to really like it. She dug her hole and then stayed in it for hours. When I finally took her out of the hole there were just the two eggs. I left her in there for 36 hours but she never did dig again. Ever since she’s been passing an egg or two when she poops. It’s not like she’s laying them on the surface of her enclosure here and there...it’s ONLY when she poops one or two will come out. Do you think I disturbed her too soon in the lay bed? It had been 3 or 4 hours and she was just laying in the hole. I’m going to give her a bath soon and we’ll see if we can’t get the last few to come out.

You just answered the question in your last post. You said she was laying in her hole for hours. They fill in the hole perfectly when they are truly done laying eggs, so you took her out too soon.

Ok...so it can take hours for them to finish? This was her first clutch, she’s 4, and my first gravid female, so I think we were both unsure of what to do, lol! Btw, the bath this afternoon...one poop and one more egg!

I’ve left them in a laying tub with a heat lamp for 2 days before ... whatever it takes for them to finish the job, but they always bury the eggs very well and you cannot tell where the hole was sometimes. They have to do this in the wild to prevent egg-raiding monitors and foxes from eating their eggs!

LOL, ok, thank you. Good to know...my other female looks like she’s smuggling marbles right now so I’ve been keeping a close eye on her. She was digging yesterday in her enclosure so I put her in the lay bed and she didn’t do anything but lay there. I put her back in her enclosure and I guess I’ll wait until she’s ready. When she does dig a hole to lay, I won’t move her until the cows come home if that’s what it takes! Thanks again :)

 Eggs in her poop???

Ohh my gosh! Finally I found someone else! We have a rescued female that did the same. When she started digging we set her in a lay tank. She had already had a normal clutch, but his time she wouldnt lay, we would leave her in the lay tank for a few days..nothing..back in her tank...dig, dig, dig. Back to lay tank...nothing back & forth. Then I noticed an egg with her poopie. Freaked me out. She eventually did the poop an egg thing 2 or 3 times, and that was it. She eventually layed the rest. Same thing though, she was eating, drinking, pooping & acting just fine. My other female (that was originally ours) once comfy in the lay tank (sometimes she teases us with the premature digging too) but once comfy will dig to the back lay, clutch & burry the eggs, and close her hole. Then we know she’s all done! She’s usually pretty easy (except for liking to lay in weee morning hrs) so this one scared me. I have also not been able to find out why anywhere. Thanks for posting and thanks all for the answers everyone. I figured she needed to lay and wouldnt, we even started her hole this time, but it never occured to me she just didnt want to lay in ’that’ tank this time, but it does make the most sense especially considering she did end up laying in her own tank after all that. Thanks all

 Eggs in her poop???

Hi, not to sure how many as I have lost count by now, lol-between her & ’my’ female. She is a small layer, her clutches seem to be between 10-15 so far with a low sucess rate, but her and her mate were rescues and this is their 1st breed..it was a suprise. Her 2nd clutch is hatching now so far with 6 babies and I think her last clutch only had like 1 or 2 survivors. We have had them for about 1 year now (the rescues) and they are now healthy but it is her 1st laying season. We obviously did not intend to breed them, but they were housed together and I dont think they are ready to seperate, they have been thru a lot and really seem to love eachother. Her 2nd clutch is doing much better, so it could just be a 1st clutch thing. I think they just need lots of love, care and good healthy food. I have seen the stress a move can make on dragons and I think they need to have some stability & lovin for a while.

wow, that’s pretty big! We have a good sized square tank in the garage (they seem to like the privacy) out there that we use with play sand, we moisten it for them and kinda build a hill in the corner. Mabey I will try a setup like yours for the rescue, Cherry next time and see if she likes that better if she gets gravid again. Daisy "my" other female just digs to the back of the corner does her thing and closes the hole. She is a heavy layer with an average of 30-35 eggs per clutch. with usually only an average of 5 or less duds. I guess Diesel can really shoot! LOL. Thanks for sending the pics of your set up, it always helps to see others. I bet that one is fun to dig out the eggs :) Daisy has been at this for years now and it amazes me at how excited we all get every time.

 Eggs in her poop???

Hi Hensons...I’m glad to hear you had a happy outcome with your girl. Unfortunately mine was not. She continued to pass eggs in the bath and in her poop for a few weeks. Every time I’d bath her I’d feel her belly and there was always one egg I could feel in the same spot. She was still acting normal, eating, basking, etc so I didn’t worry. Well over a few days she started not eating as much, would only eat worms...no salad or crickets. On the friday she wouldn’t even eat her favorite super worms so I called the vet on Saturday. The vet was completely booked for that day, closed sunday and Monday was a holiday in Canada. I made an appointment for Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 and she had passed by 10:30 that morning. That was July 2nd, I miss her very much...

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
