 New guy here.

Hello everyone out there,

Eh, I’m a newbie to this and I’m assuming you can view someone’s profile here.
Anyways, I kinda put some information as to why I signed up here, so anyone who can take a look, please do so.

I only pop in once in a while now ...But I can tell you that bigger is better... 2x2x4 is a very nice enclosure.

I posted links on the other thread...how to build stuff.

As for lights ...if you want the best (PRO) stuff...that really lasts and has been tested ..go here

MEGA RAY

I like and prefer the 100 watt self ballasted MVB (Mercury Vapor Bulb) These are far superior to the POWERSUN and TREX lamps available on retail shelves.

Read all the test data provided to satisfy your knowledge for UV information.. and then on a Google search engine type in Mega Ray ...see some of the further info and read what others have to say.

Call Mega RAy and talk with them personally to be sure you get what you need and stock is available.

if you are in a pinch and money is not a concern a Powersun might be OK for about 6 months...then the UV degrades rapidly to well below that of the natural sun.

Myself and others have purchased special metering devices to test our lamps and I have the experienced the early failure of the Powersun after 3 purchases in 3 different years ...I just won’t waste my money any more...even at reptile shows with a deep discount.

We have 1 iguana and numerous bearded Dragons so we try to give them the best we can. Sure 911 situations require some lamp in the meantime ...but I always go back to ordering the mega ray often 2 at a time to save shipping costs.

The mega ray lamps I have owned produce usable UV for 12-18 months..useable is 90 -250 micro watts of UV at a distance of 12-36"

For example ..the iguana rests in the large picture window daily with a 275 watt SB mega Ray ...275 watts can produce enough UV at 36" to give her about 200-236 watts of UV. The bearded dragon get a 100 watt lamp at approx 12-14" and receives 108 -120 watts of UV depending on where I place the meter exactly.
The 100 watt Powersun will produce barely 90 watts of UV and after 3 months drops down sharply to 60 watts. After 6 months I am very disappointed with the low reading below 40 watts. usable .. maybe , but certainly not preferred.

Natural sun measured outside ranges from 100 watts early morning, increasing to well over 350-400 watts by noon and peaking around 1 or 2 pm... then back to a reasonable level by 3-4 pm again until dusk. The most hardy dragon or iguana will seek shade during the bright afternoon sun and heat. preferring the early Am or late afternoon with constant shifting in and out of the sun over the course of a day.
Since we can not duplicate the sun inside we strive to get close and providing 100 micro watts of UV for 8 hrs is considered quite good ...even 80-90 watts ..60 ..ehhh...less is just that ...less.
So it stands to reason that in captivity they will need a shady place away from direct UV as well. Thus the larger enclosure ... and a place to retreat from heat and light.

Ok sorry for the long wind... but thats what I do...lol

PS.... NEVER BUY A COMPACT CFL UV LAMP
PSS.... NEVER !!!!

Ok, as far as Mega Ray goes...(I already sent an email asking about some of their bulbs, but I may as well ask you too) Would higher wattage be better? Like, instead of 100w, possibly 160w? And I never knew how poor the Powersun was. I never used it(the price was too insane on my part), but I just bought my replacement Zoo Med 10.0 UVB bulb... and on hearing this, I’m wondering if any problem is going to develop, even though I haven’t seen anything. Time to invest in some new lights I suppose.

And my lighting is screwed up too, usually I have the lights lined up. I never had a specific Basking area for my Beardie because he was all over the place. I guess that needs to change. And I never thought of getting a meter, that sounded pretty interesting.

I need to think bigger now, it seems.

Thanks a lot, Cphill58.

 New guy here.

These work OK for the interim, online catalogs ...this is LLL Reptiles Reptisun 10.0
http://prntscr.com/34c95g (copy and paste this creen shot.)

They are the T8 tube lamps and give off approx 34-40 watts of UVB at 12"

If you invest in the Mega Ray or power sun a 160 watt lamp clearance distance is recommended at 18"to the body of the dragon.

A meter will set you back about 200.00 full retail. Sometimes a deal will be found on E bay or a forum called
UVB METER OWNERS on yahoo groups free to join the group ...where the owner of Mega Ray and many well known lighting specialists discuss lamps / tests/ developments. And offer great support.
