Step up and say something! please tell me your stories.
or to give correct informationi to people. i hope that people reading these stories will help encourage more people to stand up and say something becaues maybe it helps or maybe it doesnt but isnt just that slight chance worth it if it helps an animal out. so write your stories. and let us know if the changs where made or what not ^^ so my story is yesterday i went to a pet store where i pick up baby crickets for carlin and super worms for feeney i had feeney with us andw hile we were waiting there was this couple. and they were talking with one of the workers and i gotta say most of these workers actually know more about there stuff then a chain pet store. so i was listening in and they were talking about how to sex a dragon. and of course we had feeney with us XD yay feeney well anywho feeney was being antsy so i didnt really get to show them how to do it but i explained the difference between each sex. and then i over hurd them talking about have 1+ year old dragons in tanks together some times and she said the one got on top of the other one. they didnt know how to sex but i mean came to the conclusion it was the male. and he look like he was trying to bite her. well me im thinking. not really trying to hurt each other but they were trying to mate. well the male was im sure. so i explained to them that even one time. you can be laying eggs for a year straight. which they didnt seem like thats what they would want lol or know how to handle. so im like yeah i wouldnt put them together. and that for somethign to go wrong it only takes secodns and i told them about buddah and abigale and explain thigns can go wrong in seconds like that. then they were talking abuot how there dragons are losing intrest in crickets. so i explained to them about how they can lose intrest in foods so try some difference and i tryed to explain if they do suppers they cant feed to much because of fatty liver disease and its really not there dragon more of there daughters but they take care of it and what not so i felt that i did a good thing because one more educated person saves another dragons life. just hopefuly they listen to the suggestions thats all i can hope for. 08/26/08 11:29am #1842990 Newfgal View Profile Message To: Shamere07 In reference to Message Id: 1842967 Step up and say something! please tell me your stories. Hey Sham, great story... Ok i got one, lol...so as you know, we are outta town right now, so yesterday we were checking out different pet stores to see who i could give heck to about the way the animals are cared for, lol, anyway, there was this one dragon that caught my eye, about 4 months old, and a missing arm, which the manager told me was from being bitten off as a baby by another, it looked ok and had healed nicely, but then i noticed it had a broken toe, it was sticking upwards, and the poor thing didn’t look healthy at all, to me, he just looked kinda sick and sluggish...then, i noticed the little adorable hatchlings, no more then a coupple weeks old, well, they were housed on sand, with tiny rocks in it, a stick on thermometer that said 80f, all over the tank, and you could just tell they were cold b/c the heat lamp was to far away, and they were all snuggled together, they had a huge dish of romaine, that was cut to big for them, and looked like crickets had been biting them. They did have the correct uvb, but that was it.. So anyway, i was so mad in there after seeing these conditions, i wanted to punch the guy out, lol, but instead i asked him if we could talk privately b/c there were alot of people in the store, but after talking for a while, i told him if he didn’t make some changes, i would report him, and told him everything i knew about proper care for them, sooooo, he said he was going to make changes, asap, but who really knows, ya know? I left that store with tears in my eyes, and can’t seem to get those poor little things off my mind, if i had the room, i swear i would have taken them all! There is a new pet store in my town owned by someone I kinda know, but not really. Welll anyway I’m standing there waiting to pay for my bugs and over hear him talking to this woman and her son, trying to sale a bearded and set up...well I’m standing there and the woman ask about light and I swear this is what he said...UVB isn’t needed, yeah a new study says that UVB isn’t really needed...And if you feel the need to use it anyway you get just as much out of a house bulb than the pricey bulbs from zoomed...he went on to tell her that lighting for beardies was just for show and not needed-that’s lighting of any kind. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing and then as he knows I have reptiles (7beardies +tons of others) turns to me and says "Isn’t that right Lela?" Well I said no and for your info UVB is just as important as the food you feed..and went about telling that woman and her son the right way to care for a bearded...after the woman and her son left I told the store owner that I didn’t agree with his sales tasted and that if he keeps lying about the care of these animals it will wreak his store because word will get around, and that I wouldn’t be buying bugs from him or anything else from him. 08/26/08 11:53am #1843185 Lacerta17 View Profile Message To: Lelareed4 In reference to Message Id: 1842995 Step up and say something! please tell me your stories. Well I work in a pet store so whenever people come in and buy crickets or worms I’m always asking what they are feeding. A young college age boy came in and bought 12 large crickets so I ask what he was feeding and thinking his response was going to be a frog and he said a juvenile breaded dragon. I about blew a gasket when he said he was feeding them 12 large crickets once a week and he ask if that was bad. GRRR!!!! I proceeded to tell him he needed to be feeding them 2 to 3 times a day all they could eat in a 10-15 minute period. He seemed shocked. I told him mine eats 60 or MORE crickets a day. He then proceeded to tell me he didn’t have much money right now but he would buy more the next time. Poor dragons. I just get MAD when people don’t research animals before getting them and then don’t have the means to meet their requirements. UGH! This Don’t concerne beardies but at a walmart There was this mom and her little girl and They were thinking Of getting one of those cut little aquatic frogs but I told them how much space they need in adult hood and then the filtration system that they need Then at this pet store in my town there was a family thinking of getting a ginea pig But they didn’t have the space or time so I told them almost every thing they needed to know and get and that was the 3rd sale I made( I don’t work there and I’m 12) 08/26/08 04:06pm #1843958 Shamere07 View Profile Message To: Ledroc567 In reference to Message Id: 1843200 Step up and say something! please tell me your stories. wow these are great stories. yes i dont care if its about beardies or not. anything that helps any pet out is awsome!. i love to hear how people help out and save animals lifes well at least we hope we do its at least we can do right. and lela i would really be intersted in hearing what your "sorta freind" said after you said this to him and what his reaction was to when you said he lie and the reaction to the coustomer. i woulda pissed my self laughing at him. but great job on not lieing. infact the thing is if you tell people the right way to set up a beardie the store would make like double to tripple what there telling these people they need. crappy uvb’s 5-10 bucks lights 5 bucks. sand 10 bucks but dont need to come back but once a month. small tank so 5g is liek 10 bucks 20g long is like 30 and sorry but 10 crickets a weeks is unecessary when they need like 500+ a week... so you think proper uvb i s like 25-30 bucks repticarpet for a 40g is like 30 bucks and if you change it otu each month cuz they poo on it alot.! plus 40g breeder is 80-100 bucks+ all the deco they need to fill it so thats another 75$ + feeders which to them is like 10c a cricket so like between 25-50 bucks a week just on feeders. so lets add that up cheap way its like 89.99 for beardie use that price as the constant. sow ith the crappy set up with a 20g long and 5 bucks in crickets i think 5 bucks is like 100 crickets. the total comes out to like 139.99 dollars with a beardie included.. thats the sale most places will make you. now the real stuff. with beardie being 89.99 and spending 30 bucks on repti carpet and 40 bucks on live feeders and deco. the sale is 339.99. and to think a proper setup will give you 200 dollars.. and then you have a ahppy coustomer well not happy at time for forking out 350 bucks. but when there dragon is healthy they wil be happy and see that you knwo what yoru doing so now you have a reoccuring coustomer and thats what makes a business. so petstores are screwing them selfs. and i know this is completely off topic but i still wanna hear stories i just kinda wanted to put this out there.. maybe if your friend lela doesnt hate you write up or at least show him that he will actually make more money doing it properly then if he did it the crap way. 08/27/08 09:26am #1844111 Ledroc567 View Profile Message To: Shamere07 In reference to Message Id: 1843958 Step up and say something! please tell me your stories. The stories are great you guys. Great idea Shamere!! I was at Petco one day waiting for the guy to count out my crickets. This was in the old days, when I used to have only two dragons. lol This woman came in and said she was a school teacher and they had just gotten an adult bearded dragon girl. She was very skinny and the teacher had done a lot of research already. But every question she asked, the Petco guy just kind of went, "ummmm, ummmm, ummmmm........" so I answered her questions. It got to the point that when the teacher asked a question he would just turn to me to answer. It was pretty sad, really. Anyway, they named her Zelda and the teacher takes her home when they have holidays and weekends off. I still somewhat keep in contact with her and Zelda is doing great. It is so great getting to know all of you and the great things you are doing for our animal world. A few years ago, when my youngest was in third grade, I was asked to help out with the pets they kept at his school in the library. They had rats, hedgehog, gerbils, guinea pig, ferret, box turtles, a pair of bearded dragons, geckos and more. I came every day to take care of them and upgraded the reptile cages to proper light and heating, often out of my own pocket. Then I got the idea to teach the kids to do it as a Pet Care Club. I did that for almost three years. The kids had to learn to care for each animal and later give a presentations on how to do so. they also had to take an easy test in order to be my assistants and start teaching the younger kids. They were also the kids who took home the pets for vacations and then I knew they had a chance of being taken care in the right way. (The kids were 4-6 graders). I also brought in speakers about various rescues or to talk about the different animals. The last year I did it, I had about 40 kids and had to split up the groups. I also got Petco to come out and donate an aquarium and talk about fish care. Well one day, as I felt I had all new speakers lined up and a good handle on where the kids needed help, the bomb dropped. I was asked to talk with the principal and the librarian in charge(who I always included in any decision made) and they fired me, if you can fire a volunteer who gives up 2 hours everyday. They said I misused funds-lol-where did they think all the money came from-not their pockets-ask my husband. They said teachers complained that the kids didn’t get back to class on time(they reduced our time to their lunch hour which the kids gladly gave up) yet didn’t give me any help with this. Then they said that their future goals were different than the direction we were going. I was furious!!!! Now the animals weren’t going to be taken care of right. The kids wouldn’t go on learning and I was being accused of things I didn’t do. It took me at least 6 months to step foot in that school again. I should say that by my last year, many of the furry pets had died or been given away because they had a student very allergic and we had to get rid of them. The ones who died were mostly of old age. Anyway, the good out of all this is that I eventually got to keep Rocky, my beardie who died this summer. I hope I touched a few lives during the time I helped. I did take my reptiles both to a preschool and give a talk and to a kindergarten class. Got the sweetest pictures as a thank you, too.
