What Darci brought home?

Belly shot...

I think it`s a Northern Water Snake. I am trying to find as much info as I can on them.

That is a very cute snake..So this might be a stupid question but do you have to keep it in a tank with water or some water like turtles.

Right now I have him set up with a hide and a large water dish. But, I had someone suggest putting him on a natural substrate (Eco Earth, etc) And once he gets some size to Him, setting Him up like a semi aquatic turtle. If I can get Him to eat, yes, we will keep him...I have a LOT more research to do.

Don’t have a semi-aquatic tank like a turtle. A turtle semi-aquatic tank is water with a floting land object. What you want it a tank that has a 6 inch glass divider in the middle. On one side(usually the left) you fill it with eco earth. On the other side fill it with water and a small filter. Onces that is set up fill the water side with some guppies and some rosy reds and maybe ONE goldfish. After that put some plants on the land side. A good idea for the water side it to have gravel on the bottom.

Before you add ANY eco earth and anything to the land side you have to test if your divider leaks(i.e through the silicone or even busting the divider). When it doesn’t you are ready.

Use a 60-75 watt bulb on the land side for heat.

You NEED the filter because the snake will drag ecoearth into the water....OR you can use spaghnum moss instead on the land side.

Hope that wasn’t too confusing. Tank size should be roughly 20-40 gallons. Obviously the 40 is better but if you get a 40 breeder make sure it says that it CAN hold water.

Thanks Jonah. Yeah, I just found a Care Sheet that says "Do NOT Set up like an aquatic Turtle"...LOL
I DO have to find Him some minnows, tho. Actually all of the Care Sheets that I`ve found say to set up a Neonate exactly the way I have Him now...With His water source being a large water dish. (He is only 6 inches long right now) I have PLENTY of extra tanks. So, Once He starts growing, I can set Him up a VERY nice enclosure.

For everyone who I didn`t just send a text to...LOL... The Water Snake just ate 6 minnows...
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got the smallest ones that Pet Smart had and they still looked WAY too big. But, He ate all 6 of them. He had been "Lurking" at the front of his tub for a couple days now. (Probably hoping I`d figure out He was hungry...LOL) I put them in His water dish, left Him alone for a few minutes, came back and the little guy was coming outta the water dish and all 6 fish were gone.

I figured he would eat them. A guy here catches them wild, & the pet store sells them for $10. My son bought one ( years back )...and it ate the feeder fish really good
