 OT- reptile rescue

hi i think maybe repticzone (more the people on repticzone) could start a reptile/exotic pet rescue i understand its very hard but it might be easier if we had like 50 ppl across the US it might work just an idea :)

oh.. lol umm like we could set up a web site and when some one had an animal they did not want they would give it to the person nearest to them and then we would put a picture on line and tell about the animal or put it in the paper.

That’s a good idea. At least some of these guys would be going to someone who knows what they’re doing. Now we just need 50 people. LOL 100 would be better.

Rescues are tough, let me tell you. LOL And if anyone is interested, make sure you can take the animal to the vet if it needs it. And that you have the equipment, like the tanks and lights and stuff.

Sounds like a good idea though.

Guys, what do you think?

I’m in. Ppl in Reno seem to have NO idea about caring for reptiles. I donated some frozen 2XXL rats to a guy who supposedly runs a reptile rescue - he keeps pythons and boas in the same cage, his albino burms are carried around in public together intertwined, they are so dry, I’m sure he loves snakes, but he knows nothing. He said my boa will grow to be over 16 - 20 feet - she’s a RTB - 13 feet is about the biggest! He thinks snakes love to have the company and enjoy being out with strangers touching them. I feel the opposite. I told him the horror stories about cannibalism and that one in the cage becomes the dominant but he doesn’t care. So yeah, I’d take in some fosters. (I did pretty good with little (not so little anymore) Olivia.

Lol. Hella! We should start it. And if it works down the line we could start a way to accept donations, etc. to pay for medical costs and equipment.

I think it’s a good idea : )

I could do it on a small scale, but would need donations for supplies/vet bills. I am in a major city area of Portland, OR so I think I’d be kind of like, one of the focal points of a rescue... just because there are over 1 mil people in portland, more than that who work in portland, and SO many irresponsible owners....

I could also talk to the manager of the local pet store and see if she’d help me out (i think she owes me lmao) so this might just work! if this rescue really does get going, I will discuss it with her. It could be kind of like an advertisement for her, too, for people to know she helps rescue animals in her shop would be amazing buisiness because people here are so supportive of respectable small buisinesses.

SO who’s drafting the applications? lol.

I think donations should either be distributed evenly, or maybe to a rep that needs it most.. Or, someone could introduce themselves in their area and ask for local donations...

With my husband still unemployed, I can’t afford to actually resue-feed/vet bills etc. at this time. But i had another idea. Maybe some of us could help locate good rescues in our area and forward the info. Like a referral system. I was thinking about this because I very seldom see anyone from Illinois on this forum. It’s usualy either the West or East or Texas, Michigan or Indiana. Are there any members in Illinois? My vet gave me the name of a really good couple who runs a rescue West of Chicago. I plan to check it out when my son comes home to see if there is anything there for him since his gecko died. what do you think?

well... i think we should give it out evenly because some one might need it bad but some one else might not want to spend all there money on that so what do you all think? i dont care

i personally run an reptile rescue and it is not as easy as you think at the moment i have 18 beardies 10 full grown iguanas 12 res 1 alligator snapping turtle, 6 geckos , and too many to count i think at last count i had 87 animals under my care that doesnt include the hundreds i ve adopted out to new homes that were checked throughly and i still make home visits everyday to at least 4 different homes to check on my rescues..

i have held reptiles thru their last stages of their lives my backyard is like an graveyard with as many as i couldnt save.. I ve cried thousands if not million of tears.. i ve been to hell and back with an reptile. i ve spent hours nursing an iguana only to have him die on me.. i ve clung to my alive rescues sobbing and saying why couldnt i just save that one???

you really need to want to help to be able to do this.. i have gone months living on kraft dinner so my reptiles got the food/ meds/ etc they needed.. i

ve begged i ve borrowed and now i owe over $50,000 just in vet bills. feed bills etc.. i cant get funding as hard as i try and apply with the government and i cant even afford my mortage this month, or my hydro or my heat bills for that matter.. and i am only 23 yrs old and that far in debt but i keep struggling on believing im making an difference in an reptiles life and at least they know they are loved..

it is a tough thing to do at first i thought oh this is going to be so easy! you learn fast.. i ve only been doing this for two years.. already so far in debt i dont think ill ever recover.. but at least i have happy reptiles

i am proud so many people want to start an rescue but you really need to think about it and make sure you have time/ space/ money in your life to do this.. getting donations is not easy at all! lots of ppl think its an "SCAM"
