 Got basilisks?

I do! 5 Basiliscus plumifrons, Lizzy is an adult female about 6 years old and Wigga is an adult male 2 years old. They have had two successful clutches. Solo hatched a few weeks before his sibs, Dothead and Dottail (the only way i could tell em apart, I dotted em, hence the names.) Check em out

Great looking basilisks. Looks like both the young ones are going to be males. Are u keeping them or planning to sell them?

We are going to keep the females. How can you tell that they look like males? I’m forever guessing.

If u look at the back of the basilisk, the black and bright green stripes on the males are more prounounced. Usually the females lack the green stripes and the black stripes are just a series of dots.

They watch people all day from their window and living downtown, there is always something going on. I think that keeps them vibrant and healthy. I take them for walks too but I have to wear gloves or get injured.

Why do you have to wear gloves when you take them for walks are they not tame after 5 years. Our little basilisk is only 4 months old but we take him out everyday to hand feed him baby chicked food because he had an injured jaw. Now he just sits and waits to be picked up. People say they cant be tamed but if you have the time and patience to pick these little guys up EVERYDAY and spend time with them, and rub their head and under their chin and talk softly to them, they will get tame.

Thankyou Mary

 Curious as well....

Pretty new to this forum, so thought I would just jump in.

I have a 6-8 mo old brown basilisk (rescue). Heís missing parts of his tail and has a few old scars. SUPER skittish. But I take him out every 2nd day at this point to give him a bath and a soak. Like yours he tries to bite on occasion. I havenít been wearing gloves as his snout doesnít seem to open enough to get a good bite on, and once I have him secured (arms to the side and legs out the back) he becomes quite docile.

Best case, I hope that this will get him used to be being held, worst case I worry that his docility is actually a sign of fear and stress (paralyzed with fear over being caught?).

Any suggestions from forum members. I feel I need to take him out and treat his tail. I think the scarring and the loss of the tip is from previous injuries combined with bad sheds. So I soak the tail, I rub it gently under warm water, use a VERY soft toothbrush just to stimulate the skin, and then rub in reptile skin conditioners.

Am I helping or traumatizing him? This seems to be taking forever to peel, but I think there is also several sheds worth of old skin on there. His tail looks like leather compared to the rest of him in which the skin appears to be very thin, delicate, and colorful.

Which relates to the above thread in that... if I am gentle and consistent can I "tame" him a bit, or is it too late? From what I understand the family that had him before me, didnít do much with him, other than curse his existence, and the rescue shelter just housed him till they could find a home. He came with a minimum of information on his past. I know they are skittish, but I would like him to more comfortable with me, so that when I do change his cage, and have to come into HIS environment I donít want to cause undo distress for him.

Not trying to usurp the thread, just looking for some advice from those with more experience.

Thanks,
BW

I was thinking about getting a new species of lizard to ad to my collection and I stumbled upon this forum. I could use some info on them. How big do they get first off. Also tank requirements or custom cage requirements. That type of thing.
