 OT-Snakes in a Will

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone has this set up already, or has any ideas how to go about it. I plan to draft a will in the next couple of weeks, and I need to figure out who to leave my BPs too. I would not be so concerned if it weren’t for two things: 1) BPs can live 20-30+ yrs, and I plan to be around longer than that, but still, & 2) I don’t know anyone that would be willing to take them (especially not my growing collection).

I have 3 dogs (all those have designated homes already), 3 Bearded Dragons (I may have a couple of homes for them), & 11 BPs (so far. & no designated homes for them). I have designated caregivers so in case something happens, they will all be taken care of for a few weeks (food, water, etc.), but nothing beyond that.

I want to make sure that if anything happens to me, they just don’t end up abandoned. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Find someone you can trust that you know is aware of the husbandry of your animals.

And specify them in the will...

I am on some of my friend’s wills, and some of my animals are delegated to people I trust as well.

Simple as pie!

I do not have it in legal writing... but I have talked with my partner about it. Primarily the people that I would trust with my snakes are the ones that will have dibs, so to speak. But I do not have any of them *officially* delegated at this point as alot can change. (I could sell some, some could die, and I am sure to add many more).

But we know what people will be approached regarding taking specific snakes that are in the collection at current.

We also agreed that things such as CITES paperwork and shipping would be taken care of so as to not incur costs to the adoptors.

Thanks for the advice guys! I think I have two people that I might be able to leave some of them to. I just need to teach them a bit more about the correct husbandry, but I think I’ll have time :). But, you did make a great point Bruce. I may sell some, etc. So I’ll go ahead & talk to those two individuals as a start. Maybe I’m assuming some people don’t want them, but I am wrong. I’ll ask my bf’s family/friends too. I trust them all.

Thanks again!

Btw Eve... thanks for the post. It inspired me to contact my assumed godmother of my sweet Olive to make sure she was on board. I had always assumed she would take her, but never had an actual confirmation.

Now I do. :)

Interesting post, to be hones I have no idea what would happen if something happen to me.

I guess I would divide them between some friends that are in this hobby and are knowledgeable.

Yeah, I can’t help but be a worry wart about my animals & I can’t imagine for a second that one of them could end up abandoned, etc. Not really looking at this from a negative angle, just from a preparedness standpoint.

I have a few more people to talk to, but I’ve made some progress. Now I’ll just have to put it down in writing (and revise when/if needed).

Thanks again!
