 Man it got warm

well I think my day went really wrong . I get up late ( actually got to sleep in for a change) about 9 30 am ( most the time I’m up by 730 am). well anyhow i get up do the normal things. well as i walk down the hall ( pass the snake room and all ) I think man it warm in here this morning. well I go over to the nearest ac vent and feel no air moving.( thinking great the unit froze up some point this morning) I shut it off and tell mom to open windows ( she busy clean so it feels warm t oher any how ). figurein about 2 hours it thaw out and run again . ( it not the frozen we either lost the blower or the duct work come loose( I refuse to go under trailer cause I hate spiders-the eight legged kind) SO any how my niece and nephew had to stay with gerandmom last night . I tell the youngest ( he 6 or 7 ) to go unplug all the snake room cords. ..HE instead went in the room and turned the heating dimmer all the way up!!!!

I had to be at a place at 10 am and didn’t think /have a chance to check ( dumb me). so I get home this evening and go ot check on the snakes since the window can’t be opened. I walk into a wall of heat as soon as I opened the door .I am going crap and rush in. I see the thermostat for the room is saying 98 I am crappnig my pannts I chec kthe one for the heat tape irt reads 113 degrees . I quickly pull the plugs and get some cool water and swap iout the water bowl (water was warm enough to bath in ) and do a complete water change for al lthe snakes . ( I now got 4 snakes soaking in the cool water like you would see people in a hot tub.
I think I amy have lucked out and noone will have any heat related problem. I will have a few words with my nephew tomorrow and point out he no were ready for his own snake since he could of cost me the entire lot of the one s i got.
I know what his problem was/is he had the nose in tv and didn’t want to do anything.
I need to dig out the extra thermostat controller and set it up so it will kill the heat tape if it gets like that again .

of coruse our other problem wil lbe ot get someon eot look at mom’s ac unit and seei f it fixable or time for a new unit .. ( which I know we can’t afford either really)...

 Man it got warm

I have had my temps jump on the hot side on few rare occasions- the thermostat probe got pushed down from the flexwatt in my rack systems and my temps like what you said yours was. You did the same thing I did with making sure there was new water put in and turning off the UTH’s to cool down.

I don’t even like relying on my b/f to have to turn the ac unit on when we go through heat spells- I am afraid he’ll leave it on way too long and such. But then again, I see the snake care as my hobby, therefore my responsibility. It’s hard to get others to understand how much the snakes mean and how important it is to pay attention if they really aren’t used to taking care of them.

Heck, when I went to vegas, I had my dad tend to the rats. He asked if I wanted him to check on the snakes, I told him not to, I feared that one of the snakes would have struck at him or he’d not close a tub all the way or something dumb like that. ( I did turn off all UTH’s for the trip and turned up the apartment heat tho)

Well, you can do a poor mans ac unit- get a bag of ice, place it in front of a fan- that will cool the room off- until the ice melts- it will give them a little relieve while it lasts, but bags of ice is not as easy to control as an ac unit. I know it’s pain to lower temps w/o an ac unit... you can try to use fans as well.

I am glad you caught it in time! Hopefully your nephew understands his mistake and if he does really want a snake, he realizes he has to pay more attention to what he is doing- this little error could have ended in disastrous results.

Best wishes! i hope the ac unit is fixable!!

 Man it got warm

I seen waht he did do he unplugged the small window fan type unit ( i use a small fan to move air aroundin the room so spread the heata little and it was set on a timer . but He will not be allowed ot handle the snakes for the next few weeks since he was careless .. I am gongio t make what fixes I can for them this monday . ( think I need ot ad dmore aire holes cause the side that faces out al lthe time stays wet ( condisation on the tub ) that the front piece lol ( in case anyone ask ) but I am letting the room cool for the night and all. ansd wil lrestart the thermostat and all tomorrow after I get home from fiing grandmom’s shed roof and dropping my truck off for a front wheel bearings .

I think I may also move a couple pieces of equipment so I can have a littl ebetter room to allow air to flow in from the window until we get the ac fixed or fall gets here..

So you relied on a 6 year old to handle tending to your snakes????? And you want to chew him out? There is a reason children need "adult supervision" and this is a very obvious one.

I’m glad you didn’t lose any of your snakes but really, you should deal with your snakes or at least supervise while you have a little one in there. As far as your niece, why not put a slide lock or hook lock at the top of the door, out of reach?

I have six children and they are very helpful with our pets but they are ALWAYS supervised!

Hope you think about it before you rely on a 6 year old again.
