 Husbandry ?

I have my thermostat set on 95 degrees and that is what the probe reads under my substrate but my thermometer on top of my substrate , which is a piece of reptile carpet is only reading 80. Does this sound right or do I need to up my thermostat?

It’s possible

Deped on how reliable your thermometer is, as well as your thermostat, the thickness of the bottom of your enclosure, ambient temps, etc

I have a Helix DBS-1000 Proportional thermostat and but my thermometer is from Meijer and cost about 15 dollars so it may be that, but do you think that newspaper would warm up better than the reptile carpet?

I have never used carpet but I would think newspaper would be thinner so it might be warmer by using the newspaper...its worth a try. I use newsprint for my snakes and I dont have temp problems.

I never worked with reptile carpet- I use newspaper, I usually cover the bottom of the cage with a few sections of newspaper.

I am also not familiar with your thermometer brand- does it have a probe that you can place directly on top of the substrate in the cage above the UTH to get an curate reading? If the thermometer is on the side of the cage, you are not getting an accurate reading. The brand I use is Acurite- 13 bucks from walmart/lowes/home depot. This ha sa probe that you can place on the hot spot. Here is alink toi a website- tho it is WAY overpriced- this will let you see what I am talking about

Acurite thermomter

If yours does have a probe and you have it set up over the hot spot, perhaps the carpet is thick, or you may just have to turn up your t-stat. My t-stats are set to about 100, but cage only reads about 92.

:D
