 Anole will not open eyes

Hello, my anole will not open his eyes, he has been very lethargic and won’t move unless you spray water on him. Any help is appreciated.

Do you have any other info? What is he eating, what is the temp in his habitat, how long has he been like this?

What’s his color and what are his tank conditions like? He may have an infection, in which case too much water can be bad. Make sure his basking spot has a temp of 90*F, and let us know what you’ve been feeding him. It may also help to let him chill on a plant inside the house to see if he perks up.

He is in a 10 gallon tank with two heat lamps and some fake plants, he also has reptile carpet. I feed him calcium dusted mealworms. He is picky and won’t eat crickets. His side’s of his mouth are very droopy and swollen, it has been like this for a while. The bad thing is that I have never handled him. He hates it. Someone I know has handled him and he was very stressed and scared. Sudden movements of him can scare me sometimes too.

Thank you- Anole lover07

From the description of the droopy lip, it sounds like MBD, or metabolic bone disease. It’s a condition where the lack of calcium causes the bones to soften in the anole, leading to a droopy jaw. If he’s getting calcium-dusted food 1~3 times a week, then that should be plenty. One thing that I didn’t see you mention was whether or not he has a UVB bulb in his setup. That’s critical, and could explain why the bones are soft. Is there an unusual shape to his tail or other limbs? The powder that you have now, does it contain vitamins as well, or is it strictly calcium?

His tail is a little bit thin, but it’s mainly ok. He does not have a uvb bulb, but it do put his cage outside in the sun, I am pretty sure the sun has the same quality as UVB, but I might be wrong. his calcium is called "Tetra" and it has a anole on the front of it. If I can remember I think it has vitamin A and D.

Thank you so much for your time- Anole_lover07

Okay, sunlight is fine, but try to eventually get a UV bulb since it’s easier to control the exposure level and you won’t have to worry about him overheating on hot days. As for his tail, you can’t really rely on it being a sign of health like you would with a gecko since anoles don’t store excess food there. Instead, look at his head and pelvis to see if he’s dehydrated and thin.

OMG. So sorry for the late reply, he has been doing ok, very lethargic and thin around his tail. Trying to get him to eat banana, having some success. Also just started shedding around his eyes, hopefully that will help. Thanks! Sorry for the late reply!

Has he shown interest in other foods offered? Have you tried something that’ll get his attention, like small roaches, grass hoppers, and butterflies?

The only thing he will eat is banana, honey, or calcium powder mixed with water. His left eye is very swollen and has some . He has been hydrated, but just his eyes make me feel terrible. I was also wondering about turtle eye drops, do you think they could do the trick?

Thanks so much- Anole_lover07

Sorry for the late reply, work has been busy. How is your anole doing? Turtle drops are usually just vitamin A in liquid form, and ive always had a hard time getting them to stay in the eye— they usually just roll right off their skin. If your anole is taking in vitamin and calcium by powder, then that’s fine. As for the volcano, it’s the island of Hawaii that’s taking the hits— I’m in Oahu, which is the island people usually think of when you say Hawaii, with Waikiki Beach, Hawaii 5-0, etc. Anyway, Hawaii island has been having earthquakes and eruptions, but Oahu and the other islands are pretty safe so far...
