 Female Aggression?

I’m having a hard time trying to sex my 2 anoles. Someone recently put up a post, with a great pic, but I can’t see the enlarged scales that are supposed to be on the males. I even tried a magnifier.
Anyway, a few days ago the two started showing signs of aggression, extending the dewlap, head bobbing, and the one changed to a very dark brown. The dewlaps on both anoles were small compared to some of the pics I’ve seen in books. So is it possible I have two females? I thought females got along fine? One of the two did shed the day after the aggressive display, so was he/she just in a bad mood?
I had seperated them, but just put the two back in the same enclosure today. I’m watching carefully for any signs of stress, but they seem fine. They were just hanging out right next to each other. So I’m a bit confused. I’d appreciate any feedback/advice anyone can give. I’m relatively new to keeping lizards. Thanks!

i dont know what kind of anole you have but if its a brown anole the females will have a diamond pattern down their back but if its a green anole or other kind of anole you have to look for the enlarged scales. i dont know if this is true or not, but the pet store i got my anole from said that you can’t see the scales until they’re a certain age. i havent checked mine yet because it’s all stressed still. i didnt know until just recently where the enlarged scales are so ive been looking on the wrong spots on my other lizards, they are on the tail base. i hope i could help

Green Anoles can be sexed in the egg. The enlarged postanal scales are visible even then. The scales are just past the vent - not at the base of the tail.

Also, females will compete until they develop a "pecking order". Their encounters are not nearly as violent as between two males.

I have green anoles, my pet store didn’t tell me if they are anolis carolinensis or A. porcatus (the cuban green anole, which looks very much like the common green anole).
Perhaps what I’m seeing is two females establishing their ’pecking order’. Their ’aggressive’ encounter wasn’t violent. They didn’t actually fight. But the smaller of the two seems scared; stressed (she’s been turning really dark at times, more often than she used to).
I’m pretty certain I was looking for the enlarged scales in the right spot, just below the vent. I’m thinking I must have two females.
Thanks everyone for your input/advice!

I also have this pecking order between females going on in my enclosure. The smallest female is very thin . Can this result in her starving her self to death? Or will they establish them selves and live peacefully?

They will eventually settle down. Make sure that you keep an eye on the smallest to make sure she is eating. In extreme cases, you might want to seperate her until she gets a bit bigger.
