 Calculating hatch dates

I have kept data on hatch dates intermittantly (depending on the brood) for the last 35+ years or so. There is an easy way to predict with a fair degree of certainty when the hatchlings will appear.

1) If you see the female bury the first egg in the clutch, simply add 42 days and that will be the approximate date (+ or - a day or two) when the hatchling should appear. Add 14 days to the date of the production of the first egg and then add 42 days for the second, etc.

2) If you have no idea when the first egg in the clutch was buried but suddenly see a hatchling scampering about, subtract 42 days and that will give you the approximate date that the egg was buried. Simply follow the calculations in the first case scenario for the remainder of the brood.

These calculations apply to eggs left in the enclosure with the parents and take into account the temperatures in a normally maintained enclosure. Incubated eggs normally take 35 days at a constant 85 degrees and 70% humidity. Eggs left in the enclosure normally take a week longer.

kewl. Although the number crunching is confusing when you’ve got 3 females in the equation!!

this might sound daft, but i figure with all your experience you have a better chance of knowing...

is there any connection with the temperature an egg is incubated and the gender of the offspring (like with most other reptiles)? if there is it might explain why they lay them in seemingly random places - most eggs are laid middle is in the tank, but occasionally there’ll be one directly on the heat mat - it’d also explain why when you buy anoles the likelihood of getting a male and a female at the same time from a shop is slim - the majority of anoles in pet shops seem to be female - either that or i got incredibly lucky not to end up with 2 males!!

The is NO correlation between temperature and hatchling sex (as in Crocodilians). The sex of each Anole hatchling is purely genetic random chance (as in humans). There are usually more females in a shipment to pet stores simply because they outnumber males in the natural environment by a ratio of about 4:1.

I also wonder why you have a heat mat (AKA Undertank Heater)? I didn’t think the UK was that cold. Or, rather, that you kept the interior of your homes that cool?

haha, its not THAT cold
but my flat does get quite chilly over winter ~the joy of wooden floors and no central heating~ and the tank is pretty big and made of glass...and i go on the logic that heat rises...might be daft logic but it seems to keep them happy and humid. it only covers half the bottom of the tank and is under the tank itself so it probably doesnt give off that much heat!! They’ve got a really little heat mat on their back wall too which i put on in winter and occasionally during summer if its chilly out - i found it keeps them from fighting.

(yes, i know they’ve got me under the thumb. they only have to look fidgety on a plant and i’ll go out and get one that is better suited for them. they’re spoilt rotten - probably emphasised by them all being named after ancient gods!!)

You might be better off with a Ceramic Heat Emitter. You could hang it above the enclosure. The beauty is that they give off heat but not visible light so they can be used 24 hours a day. Since Anoles like to bask and are accustomed to heat from above, they are ideal. They do get VERY warm and will burn though.

hmm...i’m quite wary of anything that gives off a huge amount of heat. it’d have to be pretty close to the top of the tank to do a lot of good and they spend a lot of time clinging upside down to the mesh - especially the babies - and i’d worry about burning their feet , especially after what happened to Horus with what was branded as ’safe’ for lizards!!

I think I’ll stick to my overly complicated set up, cos sometime Horus falls out of her tree at night (hence why i put moss on hard things) and at least i know she’ll find somewhere warm to sleep...
