 I’m so confused...

(i know this tecnically belongs on the breeding forum but no-one answers anything on there)

I cleaned the anoles out last saturday and cleaned EVERYTHING, and replaced all the soil and stuff, and i found 2 eggs buried under the dead leaves in a flowerpot, so i left them in there, a couple of days later there was a cute little baby (temporarily named ’wiggle 2’ even though ’wiggle 1’ is noticeably bigger) - i presumed it was from one of the 2 eggs i found in the plant pot...

however - i cleaned them out today cos i was changing the water in the waterfall anyway - and the 2 eggs were still in the place i left them and still intact.

how is this possible?!

where the devil did wiggle 2 come from?

Its possible there were more eggs in the flowerpot than it appeared. the one’s sitting on top might be infertile, while fertile ones were buried in the soil of the pot just out of your view.

depends how deep they bury them - cos i checked the flowerpots - i always figured anoles wouldnt bother burying infertile eggs and they tend to be yellow. these ones are white and healthy looking. just makes me wonder how many more eggs have been in flowerpots!! - take plants out after a few weeks to let them recover and put different ones in (so i’ve got a house full of half dead plants)

Anole’s can, if its there whim, bury them pretty darn deep. The white eggs might be fertile and I would leave them as they are, undisturbed, but remove them if they shrivel up. The plant pot is the only place I can think of where the baby’s egg may have been buried if you cleaned out the whole tank.

haha, i just thought they might not bury them deep for the sake of the baby trying to get out - no wonder it had a kind of confused expression when i found it!! it looked almost blinded by the light!!

potentially then if i kept all my plants hot and moist i’d be over-run with lizards by now!! tho i doubt very much any eggs will have survived this long!

:o)

The only other thing I can think of is somehow the baby was already there, clinging maybe into the base of the plant. I’ve heard of that before, they are so small and often so green they blend right in. I’ve started checking everything I take out with a fine tooth comb to make sure there is no baby on a fake plant I have that might drown as I put it in the soaking tank.

When we found the first baby, anytime finding him thereafter was a several hours long game of "Where’s Waldo"!!

Often, the first indication that you have had a gravid fenale is when a hatchling suddenly (and almost spontaneously) appears. They are VERY good at hiding! If you don’t pay very close attention to your Anoles, you can miss a gravid female (or chalk the weight fluctuation up to a large meal).
As a general rule, I always include a bunch of leafhoppers in each feeding in the event that I have missed something. Not only are they good for hatchlings but the adults eat them as well.

yeah when they’re little they’re a devil to find and cos i’ve got so much greenery in the tank its a nightmare to find them at times (although they seem to be going through a stage of wanting to mimic the adults and be in their way - i was a bit worried when they were crawling all over Thor cos he’s huge, but he just ignores them)

I’ve got a thing of fruit flies in there to encourage them to hunt - although ’wiggle 1’ which is the size of a small-ish mealworm ’hunted’ down a small-ish mealworm (and lost) - they’re crazy little things
