Know who to call in a hurry for care

I am posting this as often one thing that is not addressed, is whom do you seek out if your Anole is ill. Care sheets are crucial in knowing how to care for your Anole, but they aren’t meant to take care of every need your animal has.

Herp Vet: If you do not have one, get one. Every Anole you bring home should have an appointment made with a herp vet for a simple reptile check. First, this will establish a relationship with a herp vet, and second, it will screen the new Anole for parasites or other problems that you may not be aware of. Even if cleared by a Herp Vet, new Anole’s should always be quarantined before placing them in with an existing tank population. Most reptile checks will run somewhere between $25 and $50. Its perfectly okay to shop around for a good price To find a Herp vet, you can check with a vet that cares for other animals you have, or, you can check databases online in the search engine, "Herp Vet" and add your state. You would be surprised how many there are!

Many refuse to "pay" for a vet for a ten dollar lizard. That, is frankly, not acceptable and outright animal cruelty. When an individual takes an animal into their care, they assume all responsibility for its health and well being, and that includes being seen by a Herp Veterinarian.

On Call Herp Vet Now you have a vet. At this point when you take your new Anole in for his check, ask before you leave, who will be covering for your vet if the vet is ill, or on vacation. Knowing this can be absolutely crucial. Sometimes the receptionists do not know who to refer reptiles to, so asking in advance and having them check can save crucial time if your Anole gets sick when the regular doctor is away.

Where is the closest emergency clinic that will handle Anole’s do this search well before your Anole ever gets sick. Many people are horrified to find out their anole is sick or injured, and their calls are met with "We do not handle reptiles here". You can gain sources from your regular vet, or from the phone book and calling them and asking when there is no emergency holding you under the gun. It will be a great relief to know that should something arise, you know where to get help.

The boards are not a substitute for Veterinary care If you are posting in a panic on the boards that your Anole may be dying, its likely you should have taken it to a vet already. I know this should be common sense, but it needs to be pointed out. Harsh as it may sound, if you can’t afford medical care for a sick animal, you should not have the animal. Of course, posting with a concern or the question mark over your head not knowing if the condition your anole suffering is detrimental is fine, however, if your animal is near a state of utter collapse, it might be too late.

Posters on the boards are caring, and wish to help, but we are neither vets, nor, are we able to observe your reptile first hand. If in doubt, have it checked out.

There is one exception to this. There are times, truthfully, when vet’s offices are closed and emergency clinics refuse to take an Anole, and I’ve seen this happen to several people. In that instance, the boards may be your only salvation to help your pet survive over the holiday or weekend.

Know who to call in a hurry for care

a problem i have is not only are reptile specialists hard to come by near me - a lot of vets, yes but few and far between who can care for reptiles, then its a case of finding one who specialises in small reptiles. it seems over this end of the pond, its larger reptiles that are far more recognised as pets, there arent many people who are owned by anoles and sadly even fewer who deem them worthy of veterinary care - so the need for a small reptile specialist is virtually non existent.

having said that, if anyone on these boards is from nottinghamshire and has anoles, there’s a vet in hucknall who have a guy who specialises in small reptiles (having said that i think my anoles are the smallest reptiles he’d seen in a while)

I’ve found its a matter of calling around, or even ask in the pet shop you bought your anole from - a GOOD pet shop who know about reptiles are likely to have some ideas/contacts.
