 Soapbox? Perhaps...

Although I have only been a member of this forum for a short period, I have been reading topics within it for quite some time. I have learned so much by reading past posts and topics; it has truly helped me prepare the best and safest environments for my green anoles. However, the degenerative evolution of knowledge sharing and the recent vapidity is saddening.

Let’s face it, this is a public forum of which anyone may become a member. By definition, we will have members ranging from little or no knowledge all the way up to expert status. Believe me, some of the posts on here make me want to puke due to the borderline animal cruelty. But, I have to remind myself that most, hopefully all, members truly have good intentions. Of course, there will always be the occasional passer-by that likes to rock the boat. Let’s remember there are no "sides" to choose in this forum, only the side of anoles.

Having said that, we should focus on retention of active, caring and knowledgeable members. If you disagree with someone, do it respectfully. If you reply to someone, also do that respectfully. Many of us have similar questions or concerns and can, in turn, learn from the answers. For the sake of anoles, let’s embrace those with less knowledge and teach the receptive.

If at this point you are still reading, you must have related to at least one thing I’ve written. Furthermore, you must care about the future of this forum and about enhancing the lives of anoles wherever possible. I encourage you to open your door, raise your visor, and extend your hand to others. This arena is one of sharing and learning.

i’ve noticed the other forums on here are a lot less political than this one - it must be something about anoles..possibly because they aren’t the easiest reptile to care for cos - especially with the tiddly little green ones who are too damned cute for words - its difficult to tell whether what you’re doing is right. larger reptiles - like big skinks and beardies seem (i say that but i dont own one so dont really know) easier to care for...
*waits for abuse*
sharing advice is a great thing, as is sharing tips that we’ve stumbled across (probably by accident) to try to make things easier on the wiggles and their owners, but i think taking everything too literally isnt the best way either, cos if you follow everyone’s advise you’d be majorly out of pocket and owning anoles would be so stressful no-one would do it (arguably the best thing for the species/reptiles in general, i actually resent the fact that by owning anoles, the pet shop i bought them from has now been encouraged to get more in and keep them in really dry conditions, thats the only reason i havent ’rescued’ their poor little waterdragon cos i know they’ll just get another to sit in a tiny hot dry tank...makes me angry just thinking about it)

advice is just that - advice and facts are-well-facts. advice can be ignored if you choose to and should be presented that way, facts cannot.
i think the way some of these posts (i’ve read through a lot since i joined) have been written, its us who will end up with dark patches behind our eyes!!
*sigh- anole humor*

seriously though, a lot of these posts highlight how lucky some people are to have reptiles running wild round their garden - i’m so jealous of that!! i’m in the uk and we dont get free roaming lizards!!
i’ve had to refrain from posting about how cruel i think it is to want to catch one and hold it captive when it could be running free and wild and loving every minute of its life - but i dont because i think i’m in the minority there.

i’ll stop ranting now - one of the baby lizards is being TOO cute

I like to think I’m kind but firm in general. I put my foot down on animal abuse topics, I’m firm with troublemakers, and I try to take things in stride and keep a professional attitude toward others.

I will admit that I have gotten very noticeably irritated at certain things. For example, when certain people (not anyone who’s posted here) ran off our local anole expert Atrax. Just because someone states things in a factual manner (aka. not ’sugar coating’ things) does not make them rude, but that was how he was made out to be. After the constant attacks and insults toward him, even after he stopped posting for a month, he now rarely even posts as it is. Yes, I often stick up for Atrax, because he’s never steered us wrong. I would have saved myself hundreds of dollars of mistakes if I had found his caresheet before I’d bought my anole. Anyway, even after all of this, and despite that person trying to run me off as well, I still tried to remain civil. Now, however, that same person is trying to run off another member who has proven themselves intelligent and states the facts as they are. It’s hard not to get irritated at that.

Draconiz666, I have also noticed how different other forums have seen. Some of them I find a tad annoying, in that the members seem to not know anything about the animal in question, or in that every other post is an OT (Off-Topic) post. In my opinion, the anole forum can be a pretty serious one, but I believe that is because there is not much known of anoles in general, that here people can work to build and maintain a place where people can come and freely ask questions and learn more about their anoles.

Sharing advice and giving tips can be a good thing, but only if the information is right. I’ve seen people who have claimed to be quite the reptile expert, only to then post really bad advice that will end up harming anoles. Sure, you shouldn’t just listen to everyone who gives advice, but even researching various caresheets on the web can still give wrong information. The reason many of us put a lot of faith in Atrax is that he has had over 40+ years of experience and not just that, but has over the years here really proven himself. I’ve seen him help diagnose injured anoles and how to treat them (saving people expensive vet bills), give scientific explanations of the inner workings of these guys, and give wonderful advice on how to keep them to a ripe old age. In fact, a very reputable reptile magazine recruited him to write an article on anoles recently. (If interested in what magazine and issue, just PM me, or Atrax) Another great thing is he often posts techniques and methods that save you money in the long run, rather than investing in things you don’t actually need. For example, I was using special reptile basking bulbs (expensive!) before I learned that you could just use regular desk lamp bulbs.

Anyway.. the end of my rant for now. Sure, sometimes the forum gets a wrench stuck in the works, but in the end, we always find a way to work around it. :)

@ Draconiz666- its because a lot of "kids" own anoles, and think they know it all. or are caring for their anole wrong...so people with the knowledge get annoyed...its simple as that.

and honestly, i have no idea why anyone bothered to bring this topic up again.....this is just another repeat of atrax`s thread, but in different words..

No worries, Draconiz, I can see how easy it’d be to make that mistake if you’re from the UK. That could be a good suggestion for the Webmaster; having an option of displaying dates in UK time.
