Why NOT to feed your Anole "Junk Food"
First, digestion begins in the stomach but the breakdown of food is done, for the most part, in the intestinal tract with the aid of beneficial bacteria. Everyone should know what a cow is. Likewise, everyone should know that a cow’s diet is primarily grass. What you probably don’t realize is that grass is nutritionally deficient. In fact, almost all of the nutrients are bound up in indigestible cellulose. How can a cow survive? Over the millenia of evolution, cows have developed a symbiotic relationship (one helps the other) with bacteria in one of its stomachs (it has four) that are able to break down the cellulose into sugars that the cow can use as energy. Other herbivores (plant eaters) have done the same. The cow has a specific load of bacteria (both good and bad) that are able to process what it naturally eats. If you were able to get a Lion, for example, to eat a lot of grass it would eventually starve to death because it lacks the bacteria in its digestive tract to process the cellulose in the grass. It would have a full stomach but it wouldn’t be able to absorb any of the nutrients. Anoles are much the same as the cow. They have developed a balance of bacteria that enable them to break down the components of its prey (Insects) and absorb the nutrients so they can use them. Insects are chemically similar to each other as far as nutrients are concerned. The proportions differ from species to species. Anoles lack the required bacteria to break down and effectively use vegetables, fruits, etc. They may eat the stuff but they will end up, like the Lion, with a stomach (and intestines) full of something that they can’t digest. It will lead to malnutrition and, eventually, starvation. Honey is another problem. Honey is an anti-bacterial and a non-specific one. Feeding your Anole honey has a bad effect on the bacteria that they have in their intestinal tract. It will cause an imbalance and can lead to malnutrition since the beneficial bacteria have been greatly reduced in numbers. Take my advice, DON’T FEED YOUR ANOLE JUNK FOOD. Consider the damage that you are doing to the digestive tract of your Anole by doing so! |

For a human example, is it anywhere like a lactose intolerant person drinking milk, because what I understood about what I read about lactose intolerant people is that they don’t have the bacteria to digest milk and so it passes undigested for the most part. (I may be wrong, but I think that was the just of it.) |
