My boys caught a hatchling. I’ve got it in a 10 gallon tank. I’ve misted it and got a light. Only using a paper towel substrate for now and put some tiny pheonix worms for it to eat in there. Gonna try to catch some leaf jumpers and stuff for it. So what am I missing????

u could have wood chips for the flooring.just not cedar because it is highly toxic. pack it down really good so worms and crickets don’t hide in it.u should get some sticks and leaves so the anole can sleep on it.for the flooring, DON’T USE sand, soil from the back yard, or pebbles.another joice for the flooring is reptile carpet.don’t get the hairy kind because it can cut the circulation of the lizard.

But my question to you is do you know if it is a male or female?

Please read the Caresheet. Wood chips are NOT a good substrate.

Neither Peat Moss or Bark are good substrates for Anoles.

I don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl. It’s only about an 1 and a half to 2 inches long. Just a baby! LOL
As for the substrate I think I’ll just stick with paper towels for now. I put some plants in there for it to hang out on and a couple of pieces of "drift" wood I bought from a pet store a few months ago. For the most part it just hangs out on the sides of the tank.

As far as leaf hoppers they aren’t grass hoppers. They are little tiny green bugs that hang out in your yard. There’s a post on here that has a link for pics of them.

Thanks for the information everyone!

Organic compost is virtually the same thing. Most garden centers have it in 50-lb bags for a few $$.

Update on the hatchling.
I’ve put organic potting soil and added more plants for it to climb on. It’s favorite food is crickets. LOL I still don’t know if it’s a boy or girl but the kids have given it a couple of names. Number 3 son calls it "Yams" (I don’t know why) and number 4 son calls it Lizzie the lizard. It’s still awful small and I hope I am taking proper care of it. When I get some extra funds I’m planning on building a better habitat. Something more tall than wide.

I’m using a "blue light" bought at the pet store for UVA/UVB and heat. Just a basking light really.

the "blue light" that you purchased is most likely a type of "day bulb", its not too much different from an ordinary bulb most likely. It does not emit UVB rays, purchase a hood lamp and a ReptiSun 5.0 or ReptiGlo 5.0 tube bulb to fit it as soon as you get a chance.

As coolguy said, make sure your fluorescent light has UVB. This helps the anole digest calcium. Also, avoid coil bulbs, as they can cause blindness. This is for light.

For heat, you’ll want a second bulb--just a regular 60w bulb that you can buy at the grocery store.

Position the heat bulb at one end of the tank, face down over the mesh, and the other bulb in a way that its light can be reached on either side of the tank.

Read up on Atrax’s Caresheet and Anole FAQs, they’re great for beginners. I’ll bump them up for you.
