Oh one more thing I have been reading through all of these things on here and i keep seeing the same thing over and over and over and over and over again. It is this if its duwalp is really big and it doesn’t have a white stripe down its back its male. Well my MALE GREEN ANOLE has A. A small flap that is about the same size as my females which is half his size and B. It has a white stripe down its back. The only difference between my two anoles is the fact that Lenny’s (the male) underside looks like the A and that Lilly’s (the females) underside looks like the B I have had my anoles for over a month and lenny probablly over two months and i thought they were both females because of the confusing statements that everone keeps posting. I didn’t understand where to look for the two large post anal scales because I thought they were on the dorsal side of the anole. So hopefully this picture will be one that you can reference people to instead of feeding them false information. If this picture does help you out let me know by replying to this message.

Basically, the reason for that is is that most people are assuming that all males and females have large dewlaps, when some females can have bright colorful dewlaps, yet this misinformation continues to spread. Also, many males, especially adolescents/juveniles and young adults, can still retain the white stripe, and some retain it even into adult-hood.

In most cases, males have a larger, more colorful dewlap than the female, their heads are proportionally larger than the females in head to body ratio, but this isn’t always the case. In juvies it can be really hard to tell one from another unless sexed properly.

What you are seeing in those pictures IS the only real way to sex an anole. MALES SINCE BIRTH have two enlarged postanal scales/pores located just under the vent of the anole (as seen in the first pic), and females LACK the enlarged scales/pores (basically theirs are the same size as all the other scales, so you just don’t see them).

thanks really helpful we should make a forum on breeding to because many people abuse there lizards and put them in smaller inclosures in hopes of breeding its just not right...

i’m glad to see the picture of the 2 but i am like the other people. our female has never shown her dewlap like our male has. and both have the white stipe but hers whiter and a tiny bit wider. i know young males that their stipe is the same. but our female is way smaller than our male also.

Thank you for posting those pics. I was pretty certain I had a male and female, but today I saw some aggression. My newest anole (no name yet) was displaying his dewlap, bobbing his head, and puffing up his body. Valla (that I thought was female) was nearby, but a really dark color. Eventually, she (he?) started bobbing and showing a dewlap, though not quite as impressive as the new guys. They settled down and returned to their normal greens after a short while. But the new guy started displaying again and Valla seemed scared.
So, I took Valla out and put her with my 2 baby skinks. I know this is not ideal, though they did spend there first week or so together while I was working on setting up a seperate cage. At that time, they got along fine. I’m thinking I’m just going to have to get another set up.
Anyway, trying to see there undersides is going to be fun! lol They will barely let me touch them and picking them up is almost out of the question. I guess I’ll have to put them in a clear container and hope I can see what I need to see.
