my yellow is growing really fast. he has shedded 4 times since november 06 and my green is getting off now to a good start now but only has shedded once since december 06..the snakes are about the same age..

actually snakebite the size of the cage has nothing to do with it. I do however agree they do slower than retics and burms well at least in my experience they do but mine havent always eaten IM usre if you had one that never missed a meal then they would be right up there with the tics and burms and awesome looking condas man

actually if you put an anaconda in to small of a cage the anacondas growth does slow i dont mean if you put it in a big cage it will grow extremely fast i mean if you put it in too small of cage the snake will will refuse to grow by not eating and starving it self to death. And yes ive seen it happen very cruel way to keep a snake short thank god the place i work took it in. This can relate to many snakes by the way

It depends on certain factors of the growth rate in a year
1. HOw much you feed it
2. what you feed it
3. if it eats every time or if it refusses food
Like I said my male is 2 and 9 feet and my female is 2 and only 4-5 feet so there is a real difference just depends on the conda itself but just remeber just like addicted said it is a myth a snake is going to grow as long as your feeding it it doesnt matter if its in a 10 gallon and five feet long if you feed it then its going to grow

I agree, it really depends on how much and how big the prey items are that you feed it. Here is one of my males, just hit 3 yrs. this year, and I’ve been holding back his feedings for the last 5 months or so for breeding.

actually guys i have reason to belive that if the cage is bigger the snake will grow faster!

i had two baby corns and i put one in a 10 gal and 1 ina 15 gallon and fed then the same sized mouse each once a week... same heating and same decorations in the cages.. in five months the corn in the 15 gallon was 5 inches longer and the one in the 10 gallon was only 3.5 inches longer... i did switch them bothe to 20 gallons after i tested this...

i did the same thing with two king snakes and the results were close to the same... same cages sizes..


so it is possible that if the cage is larger that the snake will grow quicker..

i had two rosy boas sharing the same cage and was almost identical when babies and one grew almost 3 inches longer than the other one in 2 years and they both where males sharing the same cage

so i dont know if your tank comparison is going to stand but who knows

I think it has already been mentioned, but aside from feeding differences, growth rates really vary from one individual snake to the next. For instance, in boas and pythons, females tend to get larger than males. Sometimes they even tend to grow faster. However, I have 2.1 ball pythons, and the female and one of the males are of approximately the same age (give or take a month). The male just weighed in at 623 grams on empty, while the female weighed in at 564 grams. Caging and feeding regimens are identical, but the male just seems to pack on weight like its his job. Feeding and genetics are usually the determining factors in how fast/large a snake will grow.

Ok, let’s bring some myths down. I mean BOTH myths.
In the old days there was this idea that cage size would determine the snake size. That belief was declined in modern years. But now it has become a clichet to say "cage size has nothing to do with growth".. wich is also wrong in the general idea of it because some factors can sometimes trigger others. So, while a "cage" by itself is not a magic object that can determine growth on a living thing (lol) anything that causes stress to the animal is unhealthy and sometimes a small cage can do just that. Just like a dirty cage or a cage with no places to hide or a cage with too much light or whatever makes the animal nervous (and sometimes it depends on the animal itself, because another one can do just fine). If the animal should feel trapped in a small cage it’s quite possible that he will live a stressfull life and will not grow to it’s full potential. Stress not only reduces apetite but it’s also associated with the release of catabolic hormones (for those who don’t know, are hormones that destroy anabolic work, or cell growth).

Another myth is that many sheddings mean more growth than less sheddings. While it can be true, is not for sure. Snakes shed their skin when they go through considerable hormonal work, so growing could be an indicator but not the only one. Stress, pain, injuries, Gravid state, breeding desire...all can influence the snake and make her shed more often.

And now to answer the question: i believe anacondas grow a bit slower by nature than pythons. It’s maybe genetic, but they also seem to take more time between meals than pythons so that could explain it too.

When I got my yellow anaconda Cora, she was 2’6" long and was 6 months old.




Cora is now 16 months old and is 5’2" long. In this pic, all you can see is about 1/3 of her length. What I have really noticed is how wide her girth is becoming. She is fed 1-2 jumbo rats weekly, unless she is in shed. I have her in a 4’ x 3’ tank right now, but I am having an 8’ x 4’ x 3’ melamine cage built soon.

It is true that the cage size does NOT effect the snakes growth. If it did, my Boa would not have out grown his 20 gallon or his 33 and so on. Tank inhibited growth is fish logic, not snake logic.
