Know how to "sex" a lizard?

I just caught this Alligator Lizard the other day and it is eating well already. If it continues to eat I will probably keep it and possibly try to breed it if i come across another. The only problem is that I don’t know how to tell what sex it is. Anyone know how to "sex" a lizard, I’m guessing its similar to snakes but I have nothing to compare this one to.
Here is a photo if it will help.

Well I guess I should have looked a little better before I posted this, someone already asked this question and got a reasonable answer. Still, any feed back is always welcome.

Is it legal to catch Mandreans? I’m not to familiar with other states laws, but a quick search brought up nothing saying its illegal. You should check into that.

As for the sex, I’m not sure. I would say female, but it could also be a male. Alice should be able to help you more that I can with this species.

that ones red...is it a newborn?cause i still see the boldly coded bands and the redish colour is still there..i think it might be a newborn... also i dont really know the sexes but before you catch another one to have them mate i would first see if they are male or female before putting in another lizard...it could get pretty crazy putting the same sex in there lol.one of them will die.

Looks like a male or a juvenile madrean alligator lizard from the picture.

Before you "attempt" to breed it I suggest you figure out how to set it up properly, from the image the cage looks poor.

Madreans are legal to catch / keep. In Arizona you need to purchase a hunting license, in New Mexico no license is required for residents keeping less than the limit and not intending to sell. Out of staters, and people intending to collect commercially in New Mexico need a hunting license and commercial collection permit.

I’m not sure on sex, a straight down shot would be the most helpful. The difference in head shape is much less obvious in this species than in southerns. I’d lean towards female, but with the angle and the difficulty of using head shape it’s hard to tell.

I keep my adult madreans at room temperature in 10 gallon tanks. I provide a 50 watt heat lamp for the hatchlings. For substrate, I use repti-bark and flat bark slabs as hides. I make sure water is always available. For food, I provide crickets fed on orange slices and fish flakes which are dusted with Rep-cal at every feeding. It is very important to dust with a phosphorus free calcium supplement with vitamin D3, like Rep-cal, at every feeding to prevent metabolic bone disease.

In case yours is a female, you should provide a moist hide. You can make this by cutting a small hole in an opaque plastic container and filling it with a moist substrate. I use moistened bed-a-beast a coconut fiber substrate. These guys mate in the late summer to fall (now) and lay eggs the following spring so if you have a gravid female you won’t know until next April/May. My female was about the same size as yours when she laid her first clutch.

Wild caught individuals don’t tolerate handling well so they should not be handled unless necessary. If you do pick yours up, flip it over immediately and look at the underside. Males will often evert a hemipene while trying to poop on you (this is how I found out the sex on my original male).
