As for the sex, I’m not sure. I would say female, but it could also be a male. Alice should be able to help you more that I can with this species. |

I’m not sure on sex, a straight down shot would be the most helpful. The difference in head shape is much less obvious in this species than in southerns. I’d lean towards female, but with the angle and the difficulty of using head shape it’s hard to tell. I keep my adult madreans at room temperature in 10 gallon tanks. I provide a 50 watt heat lamp for the hatchlings. For substrate, I use repti-bark and flat bark slabs as hides. I make sure water is always available. For food, I provide crickets fed on orange slices and fish flakes which are dusted with Rep-cal at every feeding. It is very important to dust with a phosphorus free calcium supplement with vitamin D3, like Rep-cal, at every feeding to prevent metabolic bone disease. In case yours is a female, you should provide a moist hide. You can make this by cutting a small hole in an opaque plastic container and filling it with a moist substrate. I use moistened bed-a-beast a coconut fiber substrate. These guys mate in the late summer to fall (now) and lay eggs the following spring so if you have a gravid female you won’t know until next April/May. My female was about the same size as yours when she laid her first clutch. Wild caught individuals don’t tolerate handling well so they should not be handled unless necessary. If you do pick yours up, flip it over immediately and look at the underside. Males will often evert a hemipene while trying to poop on you (this is how I found out the sex on my original male). |
